Queen's self titled debut album was released in July '73 to a mixed reaction.
Queen had become popular some years before on the live circuit, and many were anticipating a pulsing album with Queen at the top of their game, but as we all know this didn't come until the fourth album, A Night At The Opera.
While the music was good, very good in fact, the record label was holding them back, telling them to do things differently. Many will point out the drum sound on the album, very tinny, you can barely make it out. While Roger Taylor wanted the drums to be loud and explosive, the record labels drum sound was "famous across the land" and so Queen were forced to go with the label. It would be a few albums later until Roger Finally got what he wanted.
The albums front cover features Freddie Mercury standing under a beam of light, and the bands name in the top right hand corner, the album consists of 10 songs, each with a very different sound to them.
The first track, Keep Yourself Alive, starts off with Brian's roaring guitar sound and Freddie's booming vocals. Some basic attempts at harmonies can be heard in this song, as well as a rare Roger Taylor drum solo.
Doin' All Right is the next track on the album, written by members of Smile. The song itself is beautiful, the lyrics, melody, everything, and is topped off nicely by a fantastic face paced instrumental towards the end. This sound would've have done well if it were released later on in Queen's career.
Another fast paced song, Great King Rat, features great guitar work by Brian May, aswell as pounding vocals by Freddie. The tinny drum sound is very noticeable on this track towards the end.
My Fairy King, is the track famous for giving Freddie his full stage name, the lyrics "Mother Mercury, look what they've done to me" Inspired Freddie to change his name, and eventually become the star that Freddie Mercury was. The Bass can be heard very well, and John is obviously giving it his all. It also contains Freddie on Piano. Harmonies in this song have improved massively compared to the first song.
Liar is the next track, and has a punching Bass line, emphasised by the percussion. Brian and Freddie are amazing as always, and the song features and extended guitar solo.
The Night Comes Down follows on in complete contrast to any other song on the Album, there is a definate Beatles sound about it. A good, mainly instrumental track that follows nicely into..
Modern Times Rock n' Roll, this song features Roger on Vocals, and is the fastest, most rocking song on the album, it lives up to it's name, although it is not so modern now.
Son and Daughter starts off slow, and works its way up into a pounding track, some will be dissapointed to find it ends prematurely, I myself feel that the song could've been worked into something magical.
Jesus, arguably the least popular song on the album sounds something like what modern Christian rock bands would sing about. The lyrics just don't work well, and although the music is good, it could be a lot better. This is definately the missing link in the album.
An early instrumental version of Seven Seas Of Rhye finishes off the album. Slower and with lack of vocals, it is a lot different to what people hear on the finished version.
Overall a good debut from Queen, but nothing in comparison to some of their later material that we are all so familiar with. I would only reccomend purchasing this if you are a collector, or an avid Queen fan.
Advantages: Fantastic debut Disadvantages: Gets a little crazy sometimes
...comparison with a lot of Queen other stuff. 4. My Fairy King
despite some rather odd wailing at the start this trackis a true gem. The way the harmonie are arranged is a demonstration of how groundbreaking Queen were at the time this was recorded. Check out the layering during the lyrics "he rules the air and turns the tides, he guides the winds" It's really really quite beautiful. Roger does a great job on screaming in the record. Truly awesome.
... ...what was to come on Queen II. It's quite a good teaser. I think after listening to that i would want to buy the next album!
Overall Queen I probably isn't the best buy if you're new to Queen but if you're starting to get in to them then it's a weel worth purchase. I think it's such a great album. Sure it isn't as good as others such as Queen II and A Night at the Opera but it's a definite must have for any queen fans collection. ...

Advantages: Good guitar and original Queen Disadvantages: Inconsistent at times
Queen emerged in 1973 with their first album, Queen. Prior to this albums release, Queen released a single, "Keep Yourself Alive", also containing "Son and Daughter". In my opinion, this was Queen at their best, For it was during the 70's that Queen were a heavy band.
Most noticeably, they have NO songs from the Greatest Hits, however, do not be put off, Queen were at a stage in their career, where they produced less hits. The best songs on this ... ...we all know better on Queen II.
The album starts off well with "Keep Yourself Alive". This song has great guitar throughout, and is probably the best track on the album. Brian May shows just why he is regarded as one of the best guitarist's of all time.
The next song, "Doing Alright" is not so good. a gentle song, and a much lighter one to the other tracks on this album. this song is closer to pop, and in my opinion never really gets going.

...signature sound of the earlier Queen material. It makes the song unique!! They also featured Roger's screeching on "In the Lap of the Gods", "Ogre Battle", and "39". I wouldn't want to hear these songs without the famous high pitched Roger-isms. They're an integral part of the experience!! Brian May's guitar work/songwriting on this LP is sheer perfection along with Freddie's vocals, instrumentation and songwriting.

Advantages: This album show tha band and the very beginning Disadvantages: The albums did not produce any main stream hits.
Queen is the debut album the band Queen. It was released in July 1973 and was the building blocks of for what was to come. It was recorded at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea Music Centre, London. De Lane Lea Music Centre was a brand new recording studio and Queen were asks to try it out to make sure it was all set for the big bands of the time. This was a massive break for Queen as recording time was not cheap. The album was influenced by the hard ... ...their multi-tracking effects (Something that Queen used for a lot of albums) as synthesizers. Also John Deacon was named as "Deacon John" on the album as the band through it would make him sound more interesting. (O well) I love this album (as I do will all queen albums) but this is the one that started it all. The vocals were raw by a very flamboyant Freddie and the guitar was welded by a talented and different axe man Brian. Keep Yourself Alive ...

Advantages: Some big tunes Disadvantages: Soem average tracks
?All Hail The Queen? dropped in 1989 and was the debut album for the New Jersey-based rapper Queen Latifah. Working then in an alternative style which brought in lots of the Afrocentricity that was peaking in the Hip Hop community during this period, it finds her working on beats by DJ Mark The 45 King and features her working with the likes of Stetsasonic?s Daddy-O, De La Soul and Monie Love.
1. ?Dance For Me?
The album gets underway with Latifah dropping the tune that came as her debut single, and so a perfect place to begin things. You find that here she comes through raging with her rhymes, which contrast with the general idea behind the music. However I felt that it all fell into place as you see that she was able to make it all work effectively around the Breakbeats that she goes off on (and were very popular at the time) as ...
Advantages: its about Queen Disadvantages: very slow moving
Queen. Amazing music, but sadly, pretty boring people, as shown here in maximum Queen. As far as biographies go, this is pretty expensive for around £8 for an interview, if you bought one in book form it would cost about the same, and have much more information. However, you buy it in CD format simply because we can because we are lazy. To be honest, there are some interesting facts in here that the average Queen fan wouldn't know (i'm not going to tell you any), but it is a very limited amount. I'm sorry, but this really doesnt do it for me, i dont like another persons voice in my living room telling me about Queen. If you don't mind, fine, if you're family don't mind, fine, but i just don't like the format, much rather read it in a book.
Anyhow, the actual story of Queen is relatively dull anyway. Basically, they were clever, had rich ...
Advantages: Is some of the best music ever made. Disadvantages: CDs ware out, you may need to buy 2!!!
This is the best album I have ever heard, it introduced me to Queen and some of the best music ever made. If you are reading this and you don't own this CD order it at once it is amazing!!! Every song is great!! And this is coming from someone who generally dosen't like music. It incldes some the the best Queen songs ever made, 'Another one bites the dust,' 'Killer Queen,' The Seven Seas or Rhyme,' 'Bicycle Race,' 'Flash,' 'Now I'm here,' and many more. It is worth its weight in gold, and the lyrics are brilliant; the music sounds as if it is being sung from the heavens. I can guarantee that all who buy this CD will replay it a thousand imes over. ...
Queen: Freddie Mercury (vocals, piano); Brian May (guitar, piano, background vocals); John Deacon (bass); Roger Taylor (drums, background vocals). Producers: John Anthony, Roy Baker, Queen. Engineers include: Roy Baker, Mike Stone, Ted Sharpe. Principally recorded at Trident Studios, London, England Queen's 1973 debut is definitely their most underrated album of that decade. Although most tracks aren't as well known as the band's later material, QUEEN proves to be an impressively consistent listen from beginning to end. It's extraordinary how many of the group's future musical trademarks were already detectable in their debut--Brian May's orchestrated guitar harmonies, multi-tracked vocal "choirs," imaginative songwriting and dynamics that could switch from head-banging heavy metal to reflective balladry in the blink of an eye. Although QUEEN was recorded off and on over a three-year period, the tracks still manage to be focused and unified. The rocker "Liar" contains a middle section that foreshadows Queen's future hits (1975's "Bohemian Rhapsody," 1976's "Somebody To Love," etc.) while "The Night Comes Down" and "Doing All Right" are a pair of gorgeous ballads. But make no mistake, the majority of QUEEN is raucous hard rock; see "Great King Rat" and the grand Zeppelin groove of "Son & Daughter." Also included as a CD bonus track is the forgotten composition "Mad The Swine," and an instrumental version of their future hit "Seven Seas Of Rhye."
