Tupac Shakur is one of the best artists of hip-hop of all time, he created some of the most influential music ever with his music still living on today. 'R U Still Down?' was released in 1997 and is very similar to his usual material except for the fact that this was the second album to be released after his death. This was the first record sold for his mother's new imprint Amaru Entertainment which was suing Death Row records at the time. The album had created two hit singles "Do for Love" and "I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto".
The album itself has a good range of tracks that I find original to the Tupac phenomenon. The fact that he raps about his struggles, loyalty & determination is what I find so appealing about him. There is a mix of fiery, fast-paced songs to more calm, cohesive music which is very compelling. Tracks such as 'Hellrazor' to 'Fuck all Y'all' shows us his brutal talent and rage about his life. Yet tracks such as 'R U Still Down? (Remember Me)' is more of a chilled out, laid back song which is one of my favourites. It celebrates Tupac's vision of young thugs living the high life yet at times it showed his tenderness .
The fact that Tupac knew how to express his rage but on the records he had trouble expressing himself. He was still at the stage of becoming a superstar and he never progressed. In the memory of Tupac i'd recommend this album but if not then i'd steer clear and go for 'All Eyez on me' or his Greatest Hits.
