Martha Argerich's reputation is secure. She will go down in history as one of the greatest ... more
artists of the 20th century, touching everything she does with a scorching genius. And of her all-too-few recordings, this is one of the most celebrated: live performances of two of the great warhorses of the piano concerto repertoire, here transformed into the sleekest, most finely honed of racehorses. Tantalisingly, her Rachmaninov Third had to wait 13 years before it was issued, but when it finally arrived no one was in any doubt that it had been worth the wait. Its epic 45-minute span emerges here as a single stream of consciousness, with the finale as brilliantly explosive as you'll ever hear it. In the Tchaikovsky (from two years earlier), too, it doesn't matter that the opening is one of the most hackneyed things in all music--Argerich's performance is a one-off. High praise should also be heaped upon conductors and orchestras for keeping up with this most volatile of artists without upset. There is no need to hesitate: if you love these pieces, this recording demands a place on your shelves. --Harriet Smith

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Poor interpretation, sound only adequate

The recording of Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano concerto is live and although the sound is perfectly adequate, it lacks the crispness and immediacy of a studio recording. Volodos is technically outstanding, but I feel that he's just going through the motions here, playing ... ...It makes for a flat, emotionless and dull performance.
The concerto is coupled with some of Rachmaninov's shorter solo piano pieces, which are better, but still not outstanding.
If you're a huge fan of Volodos, you might want to buy this to add to your collection. If you want to hear a decent recording of Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto, buy Ashkenazy conducted by Previn on Decca and get all four for the same price. more

Advantages: Some great music Disadvantages: Compilations!
.
The first of the CD's at the movies, I would hazard a guess is the most popular of the three, especially as there is a lot of very modern music on there and no surprise with two John Williams pieces, Hedwig's theme and Star Wars, neither of which require any introduction these days. It opens however with an amazing performance by Evgeny Kissin of Rachmaninov's pianoConcertoNo3, which was used for the film Shine, now I have enormous envy for people who can perform Rachmaninov like this as the guy had enormous hands, and wrote his music accordingly, I therefore struggle to play it. But the performance is incredible and you don't appreciate how difficult it is.
The CD list for at the movies is:
1. Rachmaninov, PianoconcertoNo3 (Shine)
2. Williams, Hedwigs Theme (Harry Potter)
3. Mahler, Symphony no 5 (Death in Venice)
4. Barber ...
Advantages: A decent collection of varied music Disadvantages: Several 'sections' of music
I am myself a fan of music that particularly illuminates deeper aspects of ourselves; something that makes us 'think', or, as the back of this CD box says, 'uplifting, spine-tingling classical music'.
How could I possibly go wrong with this?
The answer is; I haven't. This is a lovely CD, the recordings are, if not beautifully clear, crisp and refreshed. The pieces are well played and some interpretations- for instance the RachmaninovPianoConcertoNo.3 Allegro ma non tanto- are some of the most beautiful I have heard.
This CD obviously lacks the massive buying power of larger compilation producers but through this it has found less well-known, more abstract performers that tend to push a far deeper message through their music.
The tracks are well-laid out and sourced; from the opening track of Sunrise from Also Sprach ...
Advantages: Good quality collection at reasonable price Disadvantages: Lacks the sparkle and flair of the recordings by Kissen and Argerich
This double CD set from Decca brings together recordings of all four Rachmaninovpianoconcertos
played by Ashkenazy and the LSO. For those people looking for a good value collection, look no
further. However, I found that No. 3 was too sluggish for my liking, taking a good ten minutes longer
than the Rachmaninov recording. Ashkenazy has also chosen the bold cadenza, unlike Rachmaninov
himself. The playing is technically excellent, but somehow lacks the sparkle of the Kissen or
Argerich recordings. This is perhaps not one for the Rachmaninov enthusiast, but excellent for anyone looking to expand their collection. ...
