Rachmaninov: The Bells - Russian National Orchestra

Rachmaninov: The Bells - Russian National Orchestra

Rachmaninov allegedly considered The Bells to be his best work, and it is not difficult to ... more

hear why. Written in 1913, there is a freshness of
invention that is irresistible. Perhaps the text
(an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe) struck a chord
with this composer's sensibilities: different
bells symbolise different facets of existence.
This piece deserves more frequent airing, and it
is to be hoped that Pletnev and his Russian forces
help raise awareness of this. The soloists are
superb (Mescheriakova is particularly impressive),
but the real star is the Moscow State Chamber
Choir. This is a worthy companion to Pletnev's
accounts of Rachmaninov orchestral works. Sergei
Taneyev is a composer who should be more widely
appreciated. Too often castigated in the textbooks
for being overly academic, his works nevertheless
demonstrate a freshness of invention which has
immediate appeal. The cantata John of Damascus is
something of a find. The Russian National
Orchestra creates a superbly chilly atmosphere in
the first movement, and once again the choir
triumphs with fervent singing which conveys real
belief in the quality of this music. The Bells
ranks as a fine modern performance, but it is the
Taneyev which might prove most fascinating.

Rachmaninov: The Bells - Alexander Anissimov

Rachmaninov: The Bells - Alexander Anissimov

In this recording of Rachmaninov's The Bells, the presence of Russian conductor Alexander ... more

Anissimov results in a thoroughly idiomatic (and
vibrantly dramatic) performance which always knows
where it's going, with speeds finely judged,
balance immaculate and bags of shape. The male
soloists hail from Belarus which also helps, but
Helen Field demonstrates that you don't have to be
east European to make an impression. A more
hard-edged timbre from the chorus would have been
welcome but the singing is still marvellously
committed and disciplined. There's a nice sense of
space around the excellent sound. Sure, the
simultaneously released Bells, a stunning
all-Russian affair conducted by Mikhail Pletnev on
DG, outscores and outguns the Naxos performance on
many counts but by no means puts it in the shade.
And if you're wavering, the attraction of the fine
Anissimov performance of The Rock--a great piece,
ravishingly orchestrated--may tip the balance.

Blackpool Belle?

Advantages: Something different to lisen to
Disadvantages: Not everyone's taste in music

Blackpool Belle :- Collection Volume 2 This album from The Houghton Weavers is a collection of some of their most played songs, they decided to put together this collection as many of their fans do not have access to previous recordings of the songs from the group. The Houghton Weavers as a group have been performing together since 1976, but their have been a few changes in the line up since the beginning. The line up of the group at the present time and for this album are as follows;- Tony Berry - Vocals Jeff Hill - guitar, 12 string guitar, bass and vocals David Littler - Guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals Steve Millington - Bass guitar, keyboards, accordion, percussion and vocals. The CD:- The CD inlay cover is made up of a few different things, there is a maroonish coloured background, with a picture ...

How Tinker Bell Began!

Advantages: A nice, magical film
Disadvantages: Definately aimed at a younger audience!

When I was babysitting last night, I got roped into watching ?Tinker Bell?, a film from Walt Disney where Tinker Bell is the main character. We get to learn all about Tinker Bell how she became a ?Tinker? (one of the types of fairy). The animation in this is very ?new? Disney. It is all 3D and computer animated and looks very much like the animation did in ?The Incredibles?, not like the old Disney films. I have to say I don?t think I like the animation in the new look films as much as the animation in the old films. The film starts off with the narrator explaining the jobs of fairies, which is to craft out nature, adding all the little details to things like snow flakes, giving light and colour to flowers, and helping all creatures. The narrator when goes on to say that when a baby first laughs a fairies life takes flight, we then see ...

Were You 'Saved By The Bell'?!

Advantages: One of the best TV shows from my childhood and one I still enjoy watching now
Disadvantages: The characters are a bit predictable, as are the storylines and it's not on TV a lot anymore : (

(Note: Ok, ok, so this is a long review (huh, no change there) but please keep in mind that this is about Saved By The Bell as a whole rather than just a season of the show...sorry in advance!) If you happen to be a child of the late 1980s and early 1990s, you may have come across an American adolescent sitcom called Saved By The Bell, a programme which I should have grown out of years ago but still find enjoyable to watch. As it?s way past Valentines Day, it feels like the right time to express such admiration for one of America?s truly corniest exports; set in the fictional Bayside High School, the series follows the lives of a group of friends as they do battle with everyday teenager trials including school, love and friendship and not to mention the bad 80s hairstyles and fashion! A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SHOW Originally ...
