A solid collection
Review of Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos Nos 1 & 4 (Original Versions) by  bae22

Advantages: Good quality collection at reasonable price
Disadvantages: Lacks the sparkle and flair of the recordings by Kissen and Argerich

...This double CD set from Decca brings together recordings of all four Rachmaninov piano concertos played by Ashkenazy and the LSO. For those people looking for a good value collection, look no further. However, I found that No. 3 was too sluggish for my liking, taking a good ten minutes longer than the Rachmaninov recording. Ashkenazy has also chosen the bold cadenza, unlike Rachmaninov himself. The playing is technically excellent, but somehow lacks the sparkle of the Kissen or Argerich recordings. This is perhaps not one for the Rachmaninov enthusiast, but excellent for anyone looking to expand their collection.... Read review

The Rach 2
Review of Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2, etc by  berlioz

Advantages: One of the most Romantic concertos around, full of beautiful melodies and passion
Disadvantages: over-recorded

...were initially presented in a concert on December 2, 1900, in Moscow, organized by Princess Lieven and Varvara Satina for the Ladies' Charity Prison Committee. Much hope and importance was placed on the concert, as it was to be the final test for the success of his cure, and at that it proved to be just the success what was hoped for. However, despite the enthusiastic reception, Rachmaninov still had his doubts, most notably concerning the first movement that followed in October 1901. He was worried that the first theme sounded too much like an introduction and the second theme more like the first theme. Because of this effect Rachmaninov considered the movement ruined and the whole thing became hideous to him. And these worries were expressed five days before the first complete performance on October 27! But the concert, arranged... Read review

...music of the time), caused much harm to his music. After Rachmaninov's death there were only a few works that were regularly performed, and he was mostly considered as just another forgettable anomaly in the history of music. The Second Symphony continued to be performed in its mutilated condition up until 1971, when André Previn, after performing the work with the cuts, decided to reinstate every single bar for the performances during his tours around the world at that time. In 1973 Previn recorded the work for EMI and ever since that historical recording took place, the work has been generally performed complete, even to the lengths of including the exposition repeat. Today the Second Symphony is one of the most beloved compositions of Rachmaninov and it continues to remain popular among the majority of listeners. - - MOVEMENT BY MOVEMENT... Read review
