Advantages: Hard, unconventional rock Disadvantages: An acquired taste
Rap-Metal group RageAgainst the Machine released their self-titled debut album in 1992, but the music is just as relevant today as it was back then. Songs like 'Take the Power Back' and 'Freedom' are about individual exploitation by the cultural, social, and political systems in society, and how the people must be willing to rise up and overcome such oppression. You may have also recently heard about the small matter of 'Killing in the Name' beating X-Factor winner Joe McEderry to the number one spot, Christmas 2009, seventeen years after the single first debuted in the charts.
The thing that really strikes you when you first listen to Rage is that they mean business. The whole album is intended to provide voice to the silent minority: Those individuals that feel neglected and abused are given hope through the band's resonant ...
Advantages: Innovative, hard hitting and ferocious Disadvantages: Unrelenting
In the early 90s innovative guitarist Tom Morello left his band 'Lock Up' and went in search of members for new band. After seeing rapper Zach de la Rocha playing a club he also enlisted drummer Brad Wilk and childhood friend Tim Commerford on bass. Calling themselves 'Inside Out' they put together they put together some demo tracks that would later evolve into the self-titled 'RageAgainst the Machine'. This album also features Stephen Perkins on percussion and some guest vocals from Maynard James Keenan (Tool and Perfect Circle) for 'Know your Enemy'.
Released in 1992 their first album is renowned for it's high production values (some audiophile sites use tracks, in particular, 'Take the Power Back' to test speakers and amplifiers), original guitar techniques and it's hard line stance on political issues (covering social justice ...
Advantages: Good solid album Disadvantages: Not their best
Renagades isn't my favourite Rage album by any means, but it does still contains some classic tracks.
The same outstandingly unique guitar presence of Tom Morello and the extreme voice of frontman Zac De La Rocha make it impossible to skip any track. However, something unexplainable is missing from this album, leaving it coming up short of their self titled debut, and follow up EvilEmpire.
'How I could just kill a man', and 'Renagades of funk' are the two stand out tracks in my humble opinion, but all the other tracks are worthy inclusions too.
With the upcoming reformation of the band this summer (2007), now is a great time for anyone who hasn't got them already to go out there and buy their albums.
Good stuff Rage.. good stuff. ...
