BACKGROUND ****************** Rage Against The Machine (RATM) is one of the greatest best of the 90’s. I listened to them for the 1st time during December 92, 7 months after the release of their first album “Rage Against The Machine”. I didn’t get hooked straight away I have to admit, as I was really into Guns N’ Roses at the time, and other heavy metal band. I therefore put the CD on my shelf. Until the day I decided to listen to it properly.
WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE ********************************** Right. This is the hard part. RATM sounds like RATM. They are at the origin of the so called “rap-metal”, due to the fact that the singer was rapping on the songs. Zack de la Rocha is not singing, but purely rapping. This is then rap, but on funky-hardish music. RATM is not only a singer. RATM is also a strong bond between 3 musicians: one drummer, one bassist and one guitarist. If RATM got attention, that is probably because of the music. The guitarist Tom Morello doesn’t play the guitar in a conventional way. This guy can shred (ie play really fast solos), but that’s not what he’s doing in RATM. He just brought guitar playing to another level, like Eddie Van Halen in the beginning of the 80’s. Tom Morello is using a lot of effects, making his guitar sounding like everything, except a guitar. Of course he is not doing it all the time, because he is creating a strong rhythm section. RATM has also a very talented bassist, Tim Commerford. On the first album, his bass lines are mainly following the guitar, however, on the following albums, he is getting more independent and plays his own bass lines, bringing the music to another level. Finally, the drummer, Brad Wilk is also very good. RATM is a quatuor, but the musicians are only 3… therefore each instrument has to fill more space; Brad Wilk is a very talented drummer and plays amazing rhythms. The result is a very energetic music, with amazing sounds, rhythms and feel. The music is really hard to describe, so I guess that if you don’t know them you will have to listen to them… The lyrics are engaged, mostly about politics and people harassment. RATM got into trouble several time, because they said what they thought.
LINE UP *********** Zack de la Rocha - vocals Tom Morello - guitars Brad Wilk - drums Tim Commerford - bass
THE FALL ************* A couple of years ago, RATM split up, because Zack de la Rocha didn’t see the point of the band anymore. He is now leading a solo career as a rapper and the remaining members formed Audioslave with Chris Cornell, ex singer of Soungarden. The music sounds really similar to RATM, but this time with proper singing. It is worth a listen, believe me.
DISCOGRAPHY ******************* “Rage Against The Machine” (1992): Brilliant album, a definite must-have, if you are a metal fan. “Evil Empire” (1996): Album more criticised, but I just love it. “The battle of Los Angeles” (1999): Good album, but I started to get less hooked… “Renegades” (2000): collection of songs originally written and recorded by artists such as MC5, The Stooges, EPMD, Bob Dylan, Minor Threat, The Rolling Stones, Afrika Bambaataa, Devo, Volume 10, Erik B and Rakim, and Cypress Hill.Very interesting album, I like it very much.
RATM POLITICAL PROTESTS / ACTIONS (taken from the website) ***************************************************************************** Appearing at Lollapalooza III in Philadelphia, Rage create a silent protest against censorship by standing naked on stage for 15 minutes without singing or playing a note. Each band member has duct tape across his mouth and a letter scrawled on his chest, spelling out "P-M-R-C."
Rage organize a benefit concert "For The Freedom Of Leonard Peltier," California State University, Dominguez Hills, California. Rage headlines a bill including Cypress Hill, Quicksand, Mother Tongue, X and Stanford Prison Experi-ment, with guest appearance by the Beastie Boys. A check for $75,235.91 is later presented to the Leonard Peltier Defense Fund. Rage organize and headline a benefit concert at the Capitol Ballroom, Washington, D.C. The show raises more than $8,000 for the International Concerned Friends And Family Of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Also appearing: Handsome, Sullivan Brothers, Girls Against Boys, Chuck D. of Public Enemy, and Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill.
Rage appear on NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Their two-song performance is cut to one song when the band attempts to hang inverted American flags from their amplifiers. Rage play the Tibetan Freedom Concert, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. The two-day event draws a sell-out crowd of over 100,000 making it the largest U.S. benefit concert since Live Aid in 1985, according to event producers Bill Graham Presents. Proceeds go to the Milarepa Fund, a San Francisco non-profit group working for the cultural survival of Tibet. Also appearing: Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Fugees, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Lee Hooker, Beck, Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, De La Soul, Richie Havens. At Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Rage Against The Machine begin a series of stadium concerts supporting U2. Rage's net earnings from these performances are donated to a group of activist organizations, including Friends & Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal; FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting); the National Commission for Democracy in Mexico; FZLN (Zapatista Front For National Liberation); and Women Alive.
In Geneva, Switzerland, Zack de la Rocha speaks before a full session of the International Commission of Human Rights of the United Nations on the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the application of the death penalty in the United States.

Review of Rage Against The Machine [Remastered] - Rage Against The Machine
Advantages: A mosh of sounds. You'll work all your agro out with this. Disadvantages: Heavy stuff - in message and in sound.
...I’ve got two copies!).
Rage Against the Machine are a strange band. I suspect the Golden Rule of band appreciation is very important when it comes to Rage AtM. The rule, in case you don’t know, is never ever see the band interviewed because you’ll probably discover that they are a bunch of boring, whiny gits or arrogant fools. Rage Against the Machine are a band with a message. They are anti-capitalism, pro-freedom fighter and entirely strange. ... ...the word again to describe Rage Against the Machine. Rage is also one of the bands which have spear headed the revival of real music. It’s not all just Korn.
Tom Morello, the guitarist from the band, is the nephew of the first Kenyan President, Jomo Kenyatta. Do I get bonus points for trivia?
The Matrix (the top-notch movie) helped drag these weird wizards back into the limelight.
“Bomb Track”

Advantages: musically origional Disadvantages: there are only ten tracks
...to combine the rap/rock together, Rage against the Machine, although not particulary a band anymore, are still one of the most well known four piece bands in the world today and their debut release was probably the reason for this because it was brilliant.
A reason for the quality of the tracks may have been to do with the fact that there is a message that they were trying to publicize.
Anyhow, The first album has a total of ten songs that are ... ...which is probably the quietist rage song on the album but i wouldnt say its summut for the slow dancing to.AT ALL.
Although rage are very strong in sending out their anti government views and so on and so forth it does not particulary matter because the music they produce is so well written and performed that it makes you want to listen to it over and over again.
I bought this album three years ago after buying evil empire (their second album)and ...

...Brad Wilk. That band is Rage Against the Machine.
Rage Against the machine are a politically active band. They champion such causes as the Free Mumia Abu Jamal and Free Peltier movements, they promote freedom and an end to the capitalist regime. Well, someone had to.

...piece of recording. Every Rage album is fantastic, but this one just has the edge. Call me suspicious, but i think they had much less to lose on their first album, so went for the raw qualities that make this album what it is, but later on they settled down in their music to concentrate on their politics.
Outstanding tracks on this album include their most famous, 'Killing in the Name', with it's controversial chorus, 'Bombtrack', and 'Settle for ...

Album Notes
Rage Against The Machine: Zack De La Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Timmy C. (bass); Brad Wilk (drums). Additional personnel: Maynard James Keenan (background vocals). Engineers: Stan Katayama, GGGarth, Auburn Burell. Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California; Scream Studios, Studio City, California; Industrial Recording, North Hollywood, California. On paper, Rage Against The Machine reads like Beavis, Boogie Down Productions and Butt-Head: an angry and enlightened rap frontman who preaches a multi-cultural alternative to what they teach you in schools and show you on TV, backed by a funky heavy metal rhythm section whose vampage and riffing pay direct tribute to the likes of the Edgar Winter Group and Led Zeppelin. But there's no sense of fusion here. Neither a metal band toying with rap nor a rap group fronting as a rock band, R.A.T.M. is four guys who were never told that there's a difference, and who don't care to know. The knowledge-is-good-but-schools-are-bad rap, "Take The Power Back," gives way to a metal instrumental bridge; and the guitar that introduces the Martin/Malcolm/Cassius homage, "Wake Up," pays its own tribute to Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The closest spiritual--but not stylistic--reference point are the alternative raps of the Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy; and Rage's "Bullet In The Head" may be the best song about TV since the Heroes' "Television, The Drug Of The Nation." Rapper Zack De La Rocha has a thin voice that sounds more like a bored suburban thrasher than an inner-city rhyme animal, but his lyrics are something else altogether. Rising high above the nihilism of both hard-core rap and punk, he offers not just good slogans for a t-shirt, but the promise of a system to replace the one he's bent on destroying. His is a revolution with a purpose.
