""Rage against the Machine" is the self-titled debut album by:
**Zack De La Rocha **-His story begins in Irvine, CA, as a Hispanic youth in an area, which, during the '70s and '80s, was one of the most white-bred areas of California. His mother was an Anthropology Ph.D. and his father, Belo de La Rocha, was a well-known muralist, famous for his paintings of Zapatista farmers.
**Tim Commerford**- Tim Commerford was born in 1968 to an aerospace engineer father and a mathematician mother.
**Tom Morello**-was born in New York City on May 30, 1964 in Libertyville, IL.
**Brad Wilk** - was born on September 5 1968, in Portland, Oregon, USA.
With thumping drumbeats, heavy bass lines, fast guitar solos and anti- fascist lyrics rapped over the top, "Rage against the Machine" has the perfect qualities for an anti- America band trying to make an impact.
The album opens with "bombtrack" and
after a fast bass solo; it explodes into a cacophony of sound and energy followed by lyrics referring to America's treatment of the people in Mexico.
Most of the album follows along the same lines as this and the members of "Rage" are very expressive of their opinions in political matters, the product of such emotion can clearly be heard by Zack De La Rocha's "colorful" lyrics at the end of "killing in the name".
Rage was one of the first bands to speak their minds in such a way and had frequent run-ins with the US congress about their songs. One of their best and most famous of these, "wake up", is a prime example of Zack De La Rocha "telling it how it is"- or how it seems to be to him. He uses excellent rhyming techniques commenting mainly on the American justice system; corrupt law enforcements and controversial issues like assassinations and unjust wars: "networks at work keeping people calm, you know they went after King when he spoke out on Vietnam" and "networks at work keeping people calm, you know they murdered X and tried to blame it on Islam".
Nevertheless, although the language is sometimes abusive and controversial, they are in no way simply a band that insults just for effect; the furiosity comes from their morals, values, opinions and beliefs about our society and the world in general. Being Mexican himself Zack De La Rocha puts enormous amounts of feeling and energy into his performance, which would of course be nothing without the original bass and guitar riffs by Tom Morrello and Tim Commerford which are held together excellently by Brad Wilk's drumming.
The crowd favorites "bullet in the head", "know your enemy" and "wake up" feature some awe-inspiring effects and guitar solos by Tom, solid bass lines by Tim, excellent drum beats courtesy of Brad and an energetic and angry performance by Zack at the end, earning "Rage" their fearsome reputation as a band not to be taken lightly.
Some of the best tracks include the energetic "bombtrack", the furious "killing in the name", the political "take the power back" and "bullet in the head" and the hit "wake up" used on the first Matrix soundtrack.
"Rage against the Machine" is a brilliant album from arguably the best "rap metal band" (for want of a better word) of the 90s who led the way for other bands speaking out about political issues to follow. ****************************************************************** ******
