Last summer the postman handed me a small parcel. Inside something I want to rave about: "The rainbow children" Usually I don‘t like Prince that much but I remember once there was another album I was really fond of but I forget its name...
Anyway, I have to warn you! If you expect me to discuss all of the tracks separately you will be disappointed. I won‘t do it nor will I interprete his texts but what I‘ill do is tell you about my impressions and emotions while listening to this album. Who is curious about that may go on reading...
Hearing the very first moments I almost forget that I‘m listening to Prince but I feel vaguely reminded affected of the very early music by Frank Zappa
A wild mixture of grumbling words distortedly spoken, like rolling thunder, running through like a permanent theme funky jazzy rhythms inviting us to swing with and lift off, again Prince‘s voice soft as velvet, breath-taking drums sudden breaks background screams evoking visions of apocalyptical extent suddenly a typical Prince sound to dance to smoothly playing flutes.
I make out a breeze of Supertramp, a vocalistical approach to Boy George, a pinch of King Crimson, wonderful piano passages, freejazz guitar soli, the sound of a Big-Band and a Combo, black and white and gospel chorals, a dash of Michael Jacksons "Bad" in reverence to Miles Davis, the squeak of Mickey Mouse and the scream of guitars like Led Zeppelin, malicious rudiments of Genesis - furthermore Gong's Gazeuse, Peter Hammil and Van Der Graaf Generator, and other uncountable stars of Jazz
It‘s more than a journey through more of thirty years of music-history - it‘s a trip back to my past and I notice that I‘ve become old... I can‘t remember all the names of artists Prince is citing musically sparkling... But this music rejuvenates - like a hurricane. Not in a destructive way but it wipes off the dust of encrusted hearing habits, the boring sameness floating through our ears and burdening modern music blowing it away very gently like a light wind. Sound-patchwork would be the right word, if if didn‘t sound too amateurish. What Prince has created is a brilliant masterpiece!
It‘s a deliciously weird visionary journey through smooth landscapes as in Alice in Wonderland or the Wizzard of Oz, full of good-night-melodies rising towards the sun, crossing deep gulfs, huge canyons and smooth hills, into American piano bars and Bowies university of space oddity, ending up with a dance in a church.
It‘s the meeting between a purple chocolate cow and slimy poison-green insects, between black mummies with marvellous backs and matchless swinging hips and spindly tough beauties like Grace Jones; between a dervish like jumping Prince and an unknown white man knocking on the table his hat hiding his eyes while his pipe is puffing trails of sound-smokes.
Speaking in colours this is a dark caleidoscope lightened with LSD-turquoise-pink-yellow threads, enhanced with blodd-red dots and yellow-orange flashes, the blackest velvet black you‘ve ever seen, threatening but also giving shelter like a cave - never pastel-coloured but brilliant!
A masterpiece, a jigsaw puzzle, a patchwork, imbued with stability, penetrated by a stable net, never botched up but well composed.
Music to move to, so it‘s hard to sit down and type this text. „The Rainbow Children" have become one of my favourite CDs and I‘m glad it‘s no vinyl fading away and crackling after listening to it too often...
Again, it's weird!!! But it‘s great!

Advantages: Well, it's by Prince, isn't it?!?! Disadvantages: But it's not to everyone's taste...
This is a really tricky album to review. Apart from Crystal Ball (which is going to be delivered within the next week. Good ol' internet...), my husband and I have virtually the entire Prince back catalogue. So what did we think of this album?
Well, I like it, and he's still not entirely convinced. To be fair, it took me a while too, but give it a chance, and it's an orginal and entertaining play.
As with all Prince albums, there are certain tracks ... ...personal favourites are 1+1+1=3 , Family Name and The Everlasting Now. These are the more upbeat tracks, and are unmistakably Prince. There's an interesting narration that runs through the album, kind of like the whole "Welcome to the Dawn" thing on Gold. Interesting, or annoying, depending on how biased you are as a Prince fan.
Overall, this is a pretty jazzy offering, a little bit happy-clappy (but not too much), and it DOES deserve a try. If ...

Not the album to start with for non-Prince fans. Get Purple Rain or one of his hits compilations instead. I love it, it reminds me of a time and place that was unique and engaging: like Prince himself.
Thanks for reading!

Not a great place to start for those who are new to Prince and want to find out more. Get one of the "Hits" collections first and work backwards from Symbol to Purple Rain and you'll be well catered for. Still, for those who do know him, this album is cracking stuff and full of surprises from the outset.
You can get it for £6.97 on Amazon and £4.99 everytime HMV have a sale.
One thing about Prince, you never know ...

Album Notes
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments, percussion, sound effects); Najee (soprano saxophone, flute); Hornheadz (horns); Larry Graham, Jr. (bass); John Blackwell (drums); Milenia, Kip Blackshire, Mr. Hayes, Femi Jiya (background vocals). Recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. In the much-anticipated follow-up to 1999's RAVE UN 2 THE JOY FANTASTIC, Prince (who's now reclaimed his name) presents fans with RAINBOW CHILDREN. Dubbed in marketing campaigns as "controversial, " the album suggests a common lyrical theme of a utopian world inhabited by "rainbow children," first introduced in the jazzy benediction of the title track. The musical undercurrent connecting the 14 cuts is a decidedly more laid-back approach compared with past efforts. The interlude "Wedding Feast" may leave some scratching their heads; the vocally theatrical track sounds as if it could be part of a larger concept piece His Royal Badness plans to unveil in the near future. "She Loves Me 4 Me" is all that you would expect from a romantic Prince ballad. No stranger to social commentary, "Family Name" finds the Purple One taking a radical look at race and the hypocrisy of "racial purity." There's no shortage of funk here; especially in "The Everlasting Now" and Prince's most obvious tribute to James Brown, "The Work Pt. 1." More focused than the overflowing sets of EMANCIPATION and CRYSTAL BALL, RAINBOW CHILDREN sets a new standard for what Princeheads can expect in this newest phase of his musical evolution.
Album Reviews
Q (1/02, p.106) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...space-jazz concept [album]....mind-boggling spiritual free-for-all...leans on bracking funk..., [and] jazz flourishes..." Mojo (1/02, p.99) - "...Prince's 22nd album, a sprawling, instrumentally dazzling work....preaches with renewed vigour..."
