I know the most common terms you hear when the name Mariah Carey comes up these days are not the best to put down on paper. But after listening to her latest release, "Rainbow", you see that the labels that have been bestowed upon her are meaningless. Because when it all comes down to it her music is still great, Don't get me wrong I highly enjoy the photos inside the booklet of the CD, but the record is also something to be recognized. I brought this cd for my daughter as she loves mariah so much, that and many other artists is all i hear from my daughters room.
The record begins with the thumping anthem, Mariah's fourteenth number one single of the 90's, "Heartbreaker". Her vocals certainly shine on the record, and with Jay-Z rapping and DJ Clue on the 1 and 2 the track certainly becomes tighter. "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" is a moving song for those that need inspiration, but I personally couldn't relate to it. My personal favorite track is "How Much" which has a cameo appearance from Usher. Jermaine Dupri has produced yet another gem and it is sure to be a hit, since I have heard it will be Mariah's third single off this record.
"Heartbreaker (Remix)" is a good track but is a far cry from the original. Maybe that's because I don't personally like Da Brat or Missy Elliot, but it just doesn't have the same effect as the original track did. Her cover of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)" is definitely her strongest track vocally. The emotion she exerts, especially at the end of the song, really makes you feel the pain she is trying to express. And of cousre she is dueting with that brillant group westlife. So i think this might go along way because of herelf but mostly because of this big boy band.
Crybaby", which features gansta-rapper turned No Limit Soldier Snoop (Doggy) Dogg, is one of those songs that you wish would be released even though it probably won't be. I like it but it lacks the intensity that "Heartbreaker" has. Last but not least there is "Thank God I Found You". This song is a loving tribute to the current man of Mariah's life, Latin singing superstar Luis Miguel.
The song also just recently took over the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 i got told by an overseas pal, giving Mariah her fifteenth number one single. With lead vocals shared by R&B superstar Joe and boy band 98 degrees, this song was almost destined to reach the top of the charts. Although I personally feel the boys of 98 degrees are just about useless, seeing as how their vocals don't stand out at all. Other songs of honorable mention include "After Tonight" and "X-Girlfriend". All in all, this is probably the strongest record Mariah has put out in her career. It isn't too Pop (Music Box), it isn't too Hip-Hop (Butterfly). It is the right amount of both, which when added together and stirred produce a rather enticing combination.
