Mariah Carey to me is the best female artist around. Not only has she had a number one single every year from 1990 to 2000 but all her albums are fantastic especially her newest album RAINBOW. In this album you hear Mariah’s seven-octave voice using every octave. As the number 1 (USA) 3 (UK) single Heartbreaker shows hear using her highest octave, to petals using a very low octave. Mariah has released the album Rainbow twice in the UK because of the collaboration with Westlife on Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now).
1) – HEARTBREAKER featuring JAY-Z - Is one of the most up-tempo songs on the album, and it’s also the most pop song on the album. Her voice is perfect and with the help from Jay-Z on the rap there’s no wonder this song went to number one. The video to Heartbreaker was one of Mariah’s best videos. A good story line where her girlfriends a going to take her to the movies to show her that her boyfriend is cheating on her. BUT it’s with another Mariah formally known as the bad Mariah. They all hide behind the seats throwing popcorn at him and the bad Mariah when the bad Mariah goes to the toilets and the good Mariah follows. The have the best cat scrap in the toilets and right at the end of the song the good Mariah goes and sits next to her
boyfriend and pours a cup of coke all over his lap and says goodbye. One good video one good tune. This song is 10/10
2) – CAN’T TAKE THAT AWAY (MARIAH’S THEME) – As stated this is Mariah’s theme song for the album. A slow but very powerful ballad with her voice hitting every note perfectly this song was obviously released as a single, which entered the top ten. This takes Mariah back to her early days as a singer with the perfect ballads. 7/10
3) – BLISS – This is another slow but very different track. I’ve never heard anything like it before. I don’t think it would be a good single because it’s too different. Mariah uses her high controlled screams which dominate the song but at the same time using her very low tone. It’s mixed by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis who Mariah loves to work with. 8.5/10
4) – HOW MUCH featuring USHER – One of the songs, which has an up-tempo beat and a very catchy chorus. Both Usher and Mariah sing together and I think their voices work really well. Again produce by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, which this means another good sound. 8/10
5) – AFTER TONIGHT – This song is a smooth ballad with a very very smooth tune. Mariah’s strong vocals make this a definite Mariah song. Mariah must be talking about guys who use a girl as a one-night stand. It sounds like a Latino sound, which mixes the album from R&B to Latino to Pop to Rap. Making this the most diverse album Mariah has done. 9/10
6) – X-GIRLFRIEND – A very modern track with Mariah using a definite R&B sound about her boyfriend not allowed to have ex-girlfriends. This is one of the best fast tracks on the album and her songs if you listen to the words a very deep in meaning. This could easily be released as a single. 9/10
7) – HEARTBREAKER (REMIX) featuring Da Brat & Missy ‘Misdemeanour’ Elliott – The remix to Heartbreaker which was on the single and is ten out of ten as this song is very catchy and will easily get you in the dancing and singing mood. With a new verse it’s a brilliant rap and R&B song. 10/10
8) – VULNERABILITY (Interlude) – Only a very short tune but it does having a lot of meaning. It’s about someone having their heart broken which the album is all about. 4/5
9) – AGAISNT ALL ODDS (TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW) – A Phil Collins cover that she does superbly. Not only did this get to number one in the UK but she also collaborated with Westlife which was a very smart move. This is Mariah on her own as the collaboration song is also on the SEPICAL CD which I luckily have. 9/10
10) - CRYBABY featuring Snopp Doggy Dog – A very hip-hop number which I love to bits. Mariah definitely knows who to collaborate with. A very distinctive song which will stay in your head for ages. A very likely single! 10/10
11) – DID I DO THAT? – This song starts of with a very childish ding on the xylophones then jumps straight into a hip-hop R&B sound. Using her low tones in the beginning and the very high a powerful towards the end this song could easily be another single. With the help of Mystikal and Master P Mariah definitely knows who to collaborate with and she does it with such style. 9/10
12) - PETALS – Another very very different song to Mariah’s style, but very classy. This is my favourite song on the album which is all about her family pretending they are petals as they scatter in the wind which her parents split and family problems. It’s the saddest song I’ve ever heard and Mariah’s low tone vocals which don’t go high make it really dramatic. I hope she releases this song as a single as I would like to see what the public would think. It has a very deep and sad meaning BRILLIANT!!!! 10/10
13) - RAINBOW (Interlude) – The album title, but sadly on an interlude but a very good interlude. This sounds like a very sad interlude – not quite sure what it means but I think it carries on from Petals about her family. 4/5
14) - THANK GOD I FOUND YOU featuring JOE & 98 DEGREES – This is one of Mariah’s best collaboration on the album giving another boy band a chance to sing with her and an unknown sing Joe who has just released a single ‘Stutter’ This again made the top ten as a single and I’m not surprised as it’s a very soft sound with very soft vocals from all 8/10
15) - AGAISNT ALL ODDS (TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW) featuring WESTLIFE – People say collaborating with Westlife made this song go to number one in the UK but I think it would have easily gone to number one without Westlife. But I’m biased? 8/10
This albums out now! Feel free to leave a comments thanks Mat b

Advantages: The album cover does make for interesting discussions about the decline in the faith of pop divas Disadvantages: The quality of the songs, perhaps? Still, the album cover’s supposed to keep your mind off all that.
