likeliest of musical combinations. But on this welcome collaboration album, they work beautifully together, wringing a kind of magic from other peoples songs. The key to the album is its versatility. Between them, Krauss and Plant can handle a vast repertoire on their own, and here they take on the lot, from folk laments and country soul to searing blues and upbeat rock & roll. Overseen by Elvis Costello producer T Bone Burnett and backed by high caliber musicians like guitarist Marc Ribot and multi-instrumentalist Mike Seeger, Raising Sand sees the duo create stellar covers of songs by Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Mel Tillis and The Everly Brothers, among others. Highlights include a killer version of Roly Salley's "Killing the Blues", and a cover of the Plant-Page collaboration "Please Read the Letter," though in truth, its difficult to find a weak spot on the whole album. --Danny McKenna

Great collaboration of two artists famous in there own rights, must admit Alison Kraus wasnt very keen on beforehand but mixed with Robert Plant the mix seems to be quite striking at times. Alison's voice is quite haunting in trampled rose where as Robert sings Polly come home in such a tender and heart felt voice, love it. Have been converted to listening to other work done by Alison after loving Let your loss be your lesson, cant stop singing when that comes on in the car. Very surprised by this cd as i honestly thought i wouldnt enjoy it, but it may not be to Plant fans taste but would certainlyy appeal to Kraus fans.
Advantages: Great mix of two great artists Disadvantages: Bit of a slow tempo album
I bought this for my partner as she loves Led Zepplin (Robert Plant being the Lead Singer). I am a fan of country/folk so I found Alison Krauss appealing. This album is full of very slow ballad type songs with a couple of lively exceptions. But don't let that put you off. This is a very good album but I would reccommend that you listen to the whole thing in one go (possibly whilst in the bath or something similar) as this is a great collection to ... ...sung into them and this makes great listening. A personal favourite of mine is Killing the Blues just because the tone of both their voices really harmonises on this particular track.
You can tell they didn't make this for the money. This is about loving classic songs and putting their own twists on it.
Great album. ...

Advantages: Great songs, vocals from both leads, arrangements and feel Disadvantages: None
On paper, the pairing of Zepplin frontman RobertPlant and folk country singer AlisonKrauss appears to be an odd one akin to Kylie and Nick Cave (well, actually, no pairing will ever be that odd). Released at the tail end of 2007 this album was greeted with justified critical acclaim and 6 Grammies for it's troubles including album of the year, contemporary American/ Folk album of the year and record of the year for the song 'Please Read The Letter'. This is testament to what in my opinion is a definitive contemporary folk/ country record and for anyone looking for an entry point into the genre, the best place to start.
What makes this work is that the unlikely pairing actually works very well together. This is all very laid-back stuff. Anyone hoping for a Plant rock out will be sorely disappointed as his performance here is ...
Advantages: Two great artists, memorable vocal peformances, some super songs Disadvantages: A few less memorable numbers, stalwart Led Zep fans may cringe
When I first read that blue grass star AlisonKrauss was going to make an album with the legendary Led Zeppelin frontman RobertPlant, I was apprehensive to say the least. I had no idea what it would be like and couldn't work out how they could combine their quite different talents.
RobertPlant should need no introduction, but if you've been living in a
different universe for the last few decades let me briefly describe his style. As the flamboyant Led Zeppelin vocalist Plant was the inspiration for more than one generation of would-be rock idols, noted for his tight trousers, long curly locks and his (at times) screeching, sultry vocals. In recent years he has mellowed a bit and his appearances at the annual Cropredy Festival in Oxfordshire - one for the folkies - have been well received. "The Zep" set the
standard by which all ...

Album Notes
American bluegrass star Alison Krauss and Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant team up for one of contemporary music's most unlikely partnerships, and in doing so create a memorable and diverse collection of lovingly crafted songs. Recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville and produced by T-Bone Burnett (Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello), the album features a stellar supporting cast of musicians and includes interpretations of classics as well as lesser known gems by songwriters such as Gene Clark and Tom Waits.
