Additional notes
Album Notes: BLUEGRASS: INDEPENDENT LABELS SIDES 1951-1954 is a cause for celebration in circles that like their bluegrass a little less pure and a little more rough and tumble. Collecting 100 sides across four discs, this set focuses on the outskirts of Bill Monroe's bluegrass revolution in post-World War II rural America in the same way that NUGGETS series focuses on the effect the Beatles had on the '60s suburban American garage. While historically dismissed by ivory tower roots historians for their lack of polish and their poor recording quality, these rare recordings kick up dust clouds with frenetic solos, rough high harmonies, breakneck paces, and a barnstorming spirit. There are some famous names--such as Jim & Jesse, Red Allen, and Sonny Osborne--but by and large, these players were scrappy lifers on cottage industry labels such as Blue Ridge, Kentucky, Folk Star, and Mutual (among others.) For completists and fans of rowdy roots, BLUEGRASS: INDEPENDENT LABELS SIDES 1951-1954 is a must own.
