When I was sixteen, I played this album over and over again, till my next door neighbour banged on the wall that she had had enough !!!!
U2 are an Irish phenomenon, and they played for the first time out of Ireland, in a place called, Coventry, in 1979. I am from Coventry before I moved to Leicestershire. The pub they played their first gig in was called The General Wolf, and they played to nine, yes nine people............... Members of U2 are, if you dont know....
Bono, real name Paul Hewson. Lead singer, and all round entertainer of the group.
The Edge, real name David Evans. Lead Guitarist and vocal singer.
Adam Clayton, real name Adam Clayton. Bass player, and founder member of U2.
Larry Mullen Jnr, real name Larry Mullen Jnr. Drums, and the other founder member of U2.
1) Helter Skelter...... A great song, one that gets you up and head banging.
2) Van Diemen's Land...... This was written by The Edge, and I think is a really
touching song, about the struggle and oppression of the people in Ireland.
3) Desire..... This is the one when if you watch the video to it, it makes you dizzy, when the camera spins round the room. An upbeat song, has some drug related lyrics in it though.
4) Exit.... only a little tune, on the dvd, not the album.
5) Gloria..... only one word to this song, and that is Gloria. They sing it about fifty times in the song, as that is the only word to the song. Also only on the dvd, not the album.
6) I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For..... Sung with a full gospel choir, and catchy lyrics, one of the best they made.
7) Freedom For My People...... Sung by an old man in the street, U2 were watching his performance, but included on the album, just for fun I think.
8) Silver And Gold....... What a song. Very powerful music, and very powerful lyrics. If you want a way out........ Silver And Gold. Hits you right there.
9) Angel Of Harlem..... Great song, great for all occasions, perks you up with its upbeat tempo.
10) All Along The Watchtower..... Stolen from Jimmi Hendrix, but a damn good song, and they cover it well, in C if you watch the dvd, you will understand.............
11) In God's Country....... A catchy tune, and well played, not on the album, but in the dvd.
12) When Love Comes To Town........... Played with the legendary B.B.King. An outstanding example of how easy they get to grips with powerful lyrics.
13) Heartland..... If you watch the dvd, you will know how big a fan of Elvis Presley Larry Mullen Jnr is. It was written around the time they went to visit The Eternal Flame at Graceland.
The next six songs are not on the album, but are in the dvd.....
Bad..... not a bad song at all.......
Ruby Tuesday.... A Stones cover, but a good version.....
Sympathy For The Devil....... A catchy little number.......
Where The Streets Have No Name....... Should have been on the album, a great rip roaring song, has you up on your feet in a jiffy.........
MLK...... Written with reference to Martin Luther King, as is another song later in the review.
With Or Without You........ This should have been included on this album, it would have made it all the better, and is my favourite song of all of theirs. Bono wears a white suit and cowboy hat in the dvd, and I think he looks quite fetching...... but not my favourite member of the band......... he plays the drums.........
14) The Star-Spangled Banner....... How could you not go to America, and be a great guitar player, and not have a bash at this riff? It leads nicely into..........
15) Bullet The blue Sky....... the title of the album comes from lyrics in this song, "from the luckless wind, comes a rattle and hum" and the rest, they say, is history.....
Next two are not on the album, but in the dvd again.
Running To Stand Still........What a song..... I love this song......... you have to listen to it. Has a powerful beat, and is great.
Sunday Bloody Sunday...... About the bombing of a Rememberance Day Parade in Enniskillin (not too sure if I spelled it correctly), and a damn good song..... The emotion that is displayed is very real and dealt with accordingly.
16) Pride (In The Name Of Love)...... This is the other song that was in honour of Martin Luther King... Early Morning, April Four, Shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, they took your life, but they could not take your Pride..... Wow, blows you away doesn't it?
17) All I Want Is You....... This is the other of my favourites on the album. All the promises we make, from the cradle to the grave, when all I want is you....... Mighty big on emotion these boys..........
Their Executive Producer, and Manager is Paul McGuinness, and the album was produced by Jimmy Iovine. U2 also have an autobiography out, called Three Chords And The Truth, which are lyrics from a song of theirs, which is All Along The Watchtower.....
I love their music, and it went a bit strange at one stage, with the album Zooropa, but their latest stuff is classic U2, vintage stuff, you never get tired of.
Thanks for reading this, ciao for now, Aussieme1106 xx
