out a new persona. With its swinging backbeat and Southern style horns,Reasonis smoother, more mature, less eclectic. Like a female Robbie Williams, Melanie C is going for the classic pop soul sound that best suits her voice. There are layered guitars and rock choruses, but she never gets lost in the mix. She has cowritten each song with a production team that includes Marius de Vries and Pat McCarthy, and created a thoughtful, personal set. On the title track, for instance, a piano-led song with a jazzy tinge, she sings about being the reluctant lover wanting to be overwhelmed, while on the languid "Do I", she asks hopefully: "Am I the one / Who makes you come undone?" She resurrects the rock chick for the more brazen "Yeh Yeh Yeh", yet this is executed, it seems, with tongue firmly in cheek.--Lucy OBrien

Mel C is just one of those people you love or hate. I hated her when she was in the spice girls. Now shes had a chance to let herself free and experiment with her own style of muisc. Reason is the follow up album to Northern Star which recieved very mixed reviews what with the rock style change of image. This time Mel is back looking in great shape after the papers reporting her as being fat which I think was highly unfair (You can't win with the papers can you, if your stick thin they slag you off and vice versa which I find very annoying) and looking something of the Mel we say in the earlier spice girls days.
The album is easy to spot, mel on the front cover all in black and white.
Mel also helped write most of the songs on this album, details of which can be found inside the booklet inside the cd case.
HERE IT COMES AGAIN Here it comes again is the first single taken from Mels second album. I really like this song, it is Mel C all over, though certainly not as 'rock chic' as some of her songs on Northern Star album. I like this song a lot but I don't feel myself that this song is worthy of the first single of the album. 8/10
REASON Starts off with a nice keyboard opening. This song certainly shows more of Mel's singing with only the keyboard accompanying her. This song is about how demanding Mel can be and is the album title. It's a little too plain for my liking this is why I have given it such a low mark. 5/10
LOSE MYSELF IN YOU This song starts off fairly slowly and keeps a steady pace throughout. This song is about loosing yourself in someone (if It wasn't obvious from the title) and not seeing anything else but that person. The beat in the track is actually quite catchy and I've found myself humming this track after listening to the album. 8/10
ON THE HORIZON Starts off very lively and continues throughout the song. I really like this song, it's very pop but I think it's one of those feel good songs. You can't feel miserable when you listen to this song. This is the second single from Reason and I think it is a very good choice. The song is about not matter how bad things can get things can always work out and see the good on the horizon... This song wouldn't be out of place on a spice girls album, it's very lively and happy sing a long song. 10/10
POSITIVELY SOMEWHERE A slow starter positively somewhere wasn't one of my favourite tracks on first impressions of this album. This song livens when the chorus arrives. Certainly not one of the strongest tracks but again, it is quite catchy. I must also say Mel performed this track superbly when we saw her in concert at the beginning of the month. 7/10
MELT Another track which again has a more pop music feel. This song isn't one that sticks out in my memory after listening to the album. I don't feel this song really gets going enough and is a bit of a let down. 4/10
DO I A slow start about being the 'one' who makes everything right for this person. This song is slow all the way through but with a catchy chorus even still and it is a simple yet effective song. 7/10
SOUL BOY Yet another slowly. Good Lyrics with very little, gentle background music so the words are very Sharpe and cutting in places. Again, another simple song which does it's job perfectly. Mels powerful voice comes through on this song very well. 7/10
WATER Water is an upbeat catchy light pop song which again I find quite memorable and end up humming. I don't think this is single material but shows off a good side to Mels strong and powerful voice. 7/10
HOME Starts off slowly but builds itself up into a song which I can only find as 'gritty' which I would imagine someone like the 'All Saints' singing. You can feel the tension and build up in the the lead to the chorus. Before the end it turns itself back around to a light Mel C song again before building itself up again to a strong beat with strong, powerful and a angry edge to the lyrics. 8/10
LET'S LOVE A lively song which is lively from start to finish. Powerful strong performance from Mel in this song. This is much more of pop meets Rock Chick which we saw on the Northern Star album. I would compare this song to 'Going down', it's very upbeat, jumpy and catchy. 10/10
YEH YEH YEH When I first heard this song on the album I hated it but again since seeing Mel open her gig with this tune it has grown on me much more. Starting off fairly quiet with a dancey beat which sounds like something from a Kylie album...obviously vocals nothing like Kylies but as the song progress it still keeps the dance beat in the background with the lyrics being a cross between pure pop music and light Mel C style Rock. A upbeat track which again is very suited to Mel C and catches the Rock Chick side of Mel. 10/10
Overall a good second album from Mel C. It is quite different from the Mel C we heard on Northern Star. A lot of the tracks on this album are slower than you would expect them to be but even still they are still pretty good. If you buy this and listen to it and don't like it don't just chuck it in the CD rack, it certainly needs to be played a good few times before you will love it. It is one of those albums which I feel needs to 'grow' on you. I think Mel's upbeat tunes are more of my faves and stand out to me a lot more.
This album certainly won't have a dramatic affect on your life but it is easy listening and well worth the money. Even if your not a Mel C Fan you could be surprised at what music of hers you really do like if you give Reason a go.

Advantages: Another quality album from Ms Chisholm Disadvantages: Too different from her debut Northern Star
...a long term solo career. Reason is the follow up to her triple platinum debut “Northern Star” which spawned 5 singles, two of which reached number one, one featuring the late Lisa “Left Eye" Lopes. Melanie tried a range of diverse sounds on her debut: Rock, R&B, Pop & Dance. Sadly the follow up doesn’t explore the same routes.
Reason, when released in early 2003 was highly anticipated. The lead off single “Here It Comes Again” being a good example ... ...no way as diverse as Northern Star. There are a couple of rocky tracks; a few acoustic ballads and some 100% pop gems, there are no R&B or Dance tracks. This is a shame as Melanie could have picked up where she left off three years previously and shed the spice tag completely. However it is still a pretty good album. Melanie obviously had more control and was pleased with the result, which is good just not in comparison with her debut.

Track 2 - Reason - 3 words to describe this song Stunning - Emotional - Tearjerking - only one instrument in this song and that is classical piano - a very mellow ballad - i couldnt really advise what its about but from seeing her live it means alot to her and you can hear that when she sings - it seems like she is down about something and needs reassurance - "You arrived just in time
Now I know I'll be fine
I'm not ashamed to say you truly ... ...another ballad but different from reason this is mainly accompanied by a quick paced guitar rythme until slight piano comes in a lot of long held notes by melanie once again proving her vocal abilities. i think this song is about spreading good will and the feeling you get when you see it in action. " Give a little bit of love to your people but save a little bit of love for yourself" "watch your heart - feel your heart melt." the song really picks ...

Lose Myself In you - This one is OK but i cant really be arsed to write much about it... its not great not bad either but it doesnt stick in your head....
