...CD Review: TheaGilmore - "Avalanche" (2003)
TheaGilmore? Never heard of her!
She has been hailed by many as arguably one of the most intelligent songwriters in Britain today, but I'll bet few have heard of TheaGilmore. Whilst record companies push over-hyped pap that they know the vast majority of the public will happily bleat along to, there are still plenty of singer-songwriters out there who haven't sold themselves out in favour of corporate mush and are quite content to write and perform some superbly crafted and performed material. By virtue of her uncompromising commentaries on life and what passes for culture nowadays, coupled with often vitriolic delivery and married to splendidly different yet catchy arrangements, Ms Gilmore climbed to the very top of the pile of independent singer-songwriters whilst she was still in...

Advantages: Great voice, Lyrics Disadvantages: None
...the final track on the album and this is a great cover of a song that really got on my nerves. The original by Dead or Alive is terrible but this is a great cover. It really changes the feel from the original and makes it much more listenable. Thea shows off her creativity and versatility on the track.
**Overall**
Several music critics have written about how good TheaGilmore is and I agree. She has an amazing voice which has the ability to do just about any genre and her writing ability is what makes her stand out from the competition. At only 28 she still has so many recording years ahead of her and given what she has acheived in a little over ten years it is amazing to think what her output could be.

...Right, that's enough book-reviewing, CD-R burning, monitor-bashing and lyric-analysing. It's back to the gramophone for me.....
WHO'S THIS THEN?
-----------------------------
It's TheaGilmore, a 26 year old singer and songwriter from Oxfordshire. She's been peddling her particularly beguiling brand of thoughtful acoustic pop since around 1997. Rules For Jokers is her third album, from 2001, and rates as possibly the finest female album I've heard for ages.
THE TRACKS
--------------------
GIven that Ms GIlmore is certainly a wordy and literate songwriter, I've included my ususal track descriptions and marks out of five, along with a best line section. Enjoy.
**1. Apparition No.12 (2:43)**
A super start to the album with Thea strumming along unaccompanied in an uptempo manner. Some great lyrics are heard throughout...
