Advantages: Great Voice Disadvantages: Not quite a classic
It's amazing - not to say frightening - that it's about eighteen years since I saw Sammy playing live in his pre-Van Halen days. Quite ironic too to think that he was sacked from that band to make way for the return of Diamond Dave Lee Roth, a move which simply didn't work out, and which has now led to Extreme's Gary Cherone filling the role. I can't see that being a roaring success either, and indeed DLR is rumoured to be returning again.
This is Sammy's first solo outing since leaving VH, and judging by the sleeve photos he's ditched his trademark red outfits for some tasteful orange numbers. Yeuch. Just as unappealing is the cover, a messy picture of a pair of shoes on fire I think. But as always it's the music that counts, so here goes.
"Little White Lie" begins with just the voice, before the all-star cast of Huey Lewis, Slash ...
Advantages: not really bad Disadvantages: not really good
This album of US-Hardrockers Van Halen is the last one with shouter SammyHagar, who has been replaced by Ex-“Extreme”-Singer Gary Cherone on “Van Halen III” in 1998. The rest of Van Halen consists, as we are used to, of Eddi Van Halen on guitar, Michael Anthony on bass and Alex Van Halen an drums.
“Balance” does not fit it’s name, because nothing is really balanced on this CD. The length of 53 minutes is filled with VH-typical partyrock, mainstream – tunes for airplay, real Hard Rock songs and some slow ballads. Van Halen remain themselves, everyone has to decide by him/herself, if this is good or not.
“Balance” is far from being a must-have. “The Seventh Seal” is a quite representative Van Halen – Rocker, the riff is well known. “Can’t Stop ...
Advantages: quick and easy to make, tasty Disadvantages: hard to find, slightly pricy
?re one of them.
● ART & DESIGN: B
Sammy chooses to switch between two outfits depending on which flavour she is at the time. Both outfits are a mixture of red (tomato) and green (chicken), giving her a strong consumer identity. It?s easy to pick her out (when you eventually find her), and if you haven?t tried her before, the picture on the front of a mug of cous cous leaves you in no doubt as to what you?re going to find inside.
● OVERALL: B+
I do enjoy spending time with Sammy, but only on a one-to-one level. She can be irritating at work when colleagues try and warm her up, as you have to quite precise with your measurement of boiling water, or she just goes into a sulk, and gets either too wet or too dry. If you don?t wash out the mug as soon as she?s gone, it can also be difficult to get it clean again, as she ...
