The Police’s second album, Regatta De Blanc (1979) was recorded in four weeks at a cost of between £6,000 and £9,000, a fraction of the amount lavished on, for instance, the second album by those doyens of street credible new wave, the Clash. Produced by the Police and their engineer, Nigel Gray, Regatta De Blanc went to Number 1 in the UK, as did the singles taken from it, Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon. During 1979 the Police sold five million singles and two million albums - but unlike most bands, they had never been in debt to a record company. Musically, it was not much of a progression from their debut album, but they were starting to refine and stretch their own unique white reggae sound and producing stuff which was both popular and artistically credible. They never looked back.
