Advantages: superb post iraq thriller Disadvantages: none
The ThirdWorld war is thriller written by BBC news broadcaster Humphrey Hawksley. It is set in the immediate future, with Iraq and the war on terror still very much the current issues of the time.
The book begins dramatically with an attack on the Indian Parliament by muslim terrorists. The Indian Prime Minister Vasant Metha finds himself helping to fight off the attack alongside his daughter Meenashki. A few days later the President of Pakistan is assassinated which serves as the trigger for a series of uprisings by Muslim extremists in East Asia. Meanwhile a US military base in Japan is hit by a North Korean missile and a sample of the smallpox vaccine disappears from a laboratory in Russia.
All these events initially seem unconnected but the American and British intelligence services soon discover chilling links between ...
Advantages: Great Value, close to the CBD Disadvantages: Lacking in va va voom
As regular readers will know I'm lucky enough to live in the beautiful city of Sydney on Australia's Pacific east coast. I settled on Sydney for no other reason that it's a beach city with a fantastic climate and is vibrant and busy. If I'd have wanted a slightly more relaced pace of life then without question I would have plumped for Perth in Western Australia. Like Sydney it has a temperate climate, beautiful beaches on the Indian Ocean and a thriving economy. I'm currently on my third visit to Perth and I'm fortunate in that I'm here on business and the company are picking up the hotel tab (not to mention the bar tab!). I picked my own hotel and the criteria was that it should not be to far from the office and not to far from downtown area or the CBD (central business district). bright sun with the temperature around 30°C. A WHITE minibus approaches, then another, and another! Invitations are issued to climb aboard. But what did the rep have to say? Dire warnings as we recalled?.about safety, speed, overcrowding et alia. We boarded the fourth bus! What an experience!
These are the 'reggae (mini) buses'! Otherwise known as ZR's (license plate letters!) the buses are WHITE some with a maroon stripe down the side. It transpired we were on Route 11. There were loads of them about ? the service was more frequent, more regular, and ran later at night.
Any trip on a reggae bus is nothing if not memorable. Our driver was an extremely relaxed fellow, smoking a thin cigarette throughout, sporting beard, dreadlocks, and a colourful knitted wooly rasta hat. Our fellow passengers, all locals, generated a great atmosphere ...
