Brummie Reggae

Advantages: Great songs, great music, serious message
Disadvantages: Some of the songs have lost their context

...9. Little by Little 10. Signing Off 11. Madam Medusa 12. Strange Fruit 13. Reefer Madness On the original vinyl the last three tracks Madam Medusa, Strange Fruit and Reefer Madness were included as an additional 12 inch single bonus record, on the CD all the tracks are obviously on the same disc and to some extent this distorts the balance of the music and album. From the very start of the record the band leaves you in now doubt about the musical ...
..."Tyler is guilty the white judge has said so What right do we have to say it's not so" Although the themes of the song is the conviction of an innocent black man for murder by a racist court in Louisiana the sentiments that it was expressing tuned in to the feelings that existed in the UK too at the time. This was a period of police brutality, inflammatory 'Sus' laws, and increasingly oppressive race policies by the newly elected Tory government ...

Rap UB40

Advantages: An excellent listen
Disadvantages: None

I am totally obsessed with UB40 and own nearly all of there albums, this being one of them, if you like reggae and rap this is definately for you. It has a mixture of all their original songs, like red wine and chrieo baby, all the songs are excellent some of them are of UB40 tunes with UB40 rapping over them, I know it sounds tacky but the way it is done is so good, you really need to listen to it, although if you do not own it you may have a job ...

...have gone. While Present Arms might not be as easily accessible as 'Signing Off' it is still a must for any fans of the band and it represents a brilliant follow up to the debut album, thus cementing the reputation of the band as one of the freshest and successful acts of the 80's 'Present Arms' can be bought from Play.com for £6.99 delivered, a bargain! Him Name Buju Banton... Nahh Mr. Mention

Advantages: Lots of bangers
Disadvantages: Ends on a track that's weaker than the rest

“Mr. Mention” was released in 1992 as the second album from the Jamaican Dancehall musician Buju Banton. It dropped soon after his debut (within a year) and so had him showing just how productive he could be at the time as he brought lots of his Dancehall material (that became much more Reggae-styled as his career developed and he embraced Rastafarians ways. 1. “Batty Rider” The album opens up with one of the biggest singles that he had released ...
...that here you get him blasting through a fly tune that has him bringing through the sort of controversial lyrics that gave him notoriety when he broke into the game at the age of 15 with “Boom Bye Bye”. It is a hardcore tune, but one that I can’t say is really for all due to the themes. **Five Stars** 2. “Love How The Gal-Dem Flex” This is a big tune on the release and one that is seen to build upon the sorts of things that were heard on the first ...

Dawning of a New Era: AMAZING!

Advantages: Perfect in every way! So many tracks!
Disadvantages: Nothing

...one of them! Dawning of a New Era gathers together tracks from the classic era of reggae, 1968 & '69, and like the equally-essential "Dancehall '69", was compiled by Michael De Koningh, which means you get an impeccable selection of prime reggae, beginning with the massive tune "John Jones" from Rudy Mills. From there highlights include the so-terrible-it's-brilliant "Rescue Me" by The Reggae Girls, the even better "Su Su Su" by The Pioneers, a perfect ...
...Flint", and "Reggae Hit the Town" - the absolute classic tune from The Ethiopians, plus my personal favourite - "Splash Down" by The Crystalites, a driving instrumental which could be used as the musical dictionary term for "skinhead reggae instrumental" (if there was such a thing), it's so good. With a great mix of skin organ instrumentals and vocal anthems, and with two CDs there are so many classics pakced on here that you'll have a fantastic ...
