Album Reviews: Mojo (p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 -- \"[This album] shows how she always did love her country music while winking broadly at all its rhinestone eccentricities.\"
...All you aspiring poets here on Ciao; listen and learn! This album is gorgeous in all ways that it could be: The melodies are superb, the arrangements are sumptuous, but more than anything one is left with a sense of the lyrics. Every song included here could quite justifiably be called a poem. Looking through the lyric booklet – a mini poetry anthology in its own right – it is made up of wonderful poems even before the music is added, giving a whole new dimension to the words.
This is k.d. lang’s 11th album, her most famous album previously being 1992’s “Ingenue” featuring her hit single “Constant Craving”. I have to admit here that this is the only other one of hers that I own, but I’ve long been an admirer of her huge voice and easy, (easy sounding –enormously difficult technically) open style. Advantages: Light, summery music Disadvantages: Can flow over you at times, and feel like background music
...This album represents, in part at least, a return to the style of “Ingenue”, lang’s 1996 album, following the flirtation with dance styles (“Just keep me moving”) and the treading water (in my opinion anyway) covers album “Drag”.

There are a couple of reasons for this, she has stated. First, lang has found true love – not the unrequited love that has inspired her in the past.
Second, she moved from Vancouver to Los Angeles three...

Advantages: Long luxuriant lyrics Disadvantages: none
...The female Elvis strikes again with this melodious and haunting classic. This is a first class works by Ms Lang and rates alongside ‘Ingenue’ almost track for track. I bought this long awaited album the week it came out and never had it off the CD drive for weeks and still listen to it on a regular basis.
Particular favourites are ‘the consequences of falling, ‘extraordinary thing’, ‘simple’ and ‘only love’. But I can recommend almost all of the tracks as they all have something of merit and the melancholy typical KD harmonies and haunting vocals come shining through. She has clearly pushed the boundaries on this album, new fans might find some of the moody lyrics a little difficult – but my recommendation is to stick with it for 2-3 listens and you’ll get...
