~ In Conclusion ~
When I first purchased “Relics” all those years ago, little did I realise that I would be writing about its merits in the year 2004! This is an ideal introduction to historical Pink Floyd tracks, and if you like your music varied, and not just a little ... Read review

Advantages: A great introduction to early Floyd, with a very varied track selection Disadvantages: None
At the age of fifteen I should have been listening to the likes of Slade, T Rex and Wizard, but something went wrong….
I had a school friend who was a record fanatic, the sort of person who would think nothing of buying three albums a week with the proceeds from his paper round, and (in my opinion) excessive amounts of pocket money. It was through him that I was introduced to the weird and wonderful world of Prog Rock, and the psychedelic ... ...Records, a local (Norwich) music outlet that no longer exists.
If you are keen to hear some late ‘sixties Floyd, you could do much worse than invest in this sampler, which comprises a varied selection of tracks from other albums. I purchased my copy in 1974 (Yikes - was it really that long ago?), and it cost me the princely sum of just 99p (thank you, EMI Starline!).

Advantages: Brilliant example of innovative 60's music Disadvantages: Maybe a little dated for some and quite different from their later work.
Relics was originally released in 1971 in between "Meddle" and "Dark Side of the Moon" and features songs from the bands early years and some more obscure tracks from the period. The title jokingly reflects the choice of these older tracks. The Tracks
Arnold Layne (Syd Barrett) Interstellar Overdrive (Syd Barrett/Roger Waters/Richard Wright/Nick Mason) See Emily Play (Syd Barrett) Remember A Day (Richard Wright) Paintbox (Richard Wright) Julia Dream ... ...and 80's post- Syd Barrett Relics will be a real surprise. The polished and increasingly epic sounding tracks that we know from albums such as, 'Wish You Were Here' and 'The Wall' were still a long way in the future although clearer musical connections can be made with the more experimental 'Dark Side of the Moon'. The songs we find on this album are excellent examples of the Floyd as the avant-garde psychedelic band of the late 60's experimenting ...

Advantages: Some of the best early Floyd Disadvantages: Tracks taken from progressive albums so they lose something
I've always loved this album and it's original cover not pictured here,it's some of the earliest progressive rock ever with, such brilliant Syd Barret Tracks as "See Emily Play" a wistful song presumably about a woman and "Bike" a pschadelic song about Syd's posessions. Pink floyds sound changed quite a bit when Syd had a breakdown and left and was replaced by Dave Gilmour, so this is an important album in my mind, keeping Syds music alive. (though ... ...of the tracks)
I also love "Arnold Lane" a strange song about a transvestite who steals womens clothes by night and ends up in prison. It has a very strange black and white video as well if you can find it. There are also many instrumental songs like "Interstellar Overdrive and "careful with that Axe Eugene".
This is a great album to play in the background at social gatherings if your friends are into Progressive Rock, this is a popular album. ...

Advantages: Some tracks not otherwise available on CD Disadvantages: Some Rubbish ... Bike..Again
This is a ragbag collection of singles and tracks from Pink Floyd's first three studio albums including The More soundtrack. The cover features a drawing of a Heath Robinson type machine by the bands drummer Nick Mason.
It's an interesting enough collection but there seems to have been very little coordination in putting it together. The singles are welcome and the studio cut of Careful With That Axe Eugene are welcome , but there was no real need ... ...pun intended), which is fine as part of the first album, but if you wanted it you'ld have the first album.
When it came out on vinyl it was priced as a budget album (99p), on CD it was full price. How can they justify that??
If you can pick it up under seven quid its worth it, otherwise you're being overcharged. ...
