Album Reviews: Down Beat (4/97, p.48) - 4.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...some of the most fertile give-and-take of the year....Chick's nod to his mentor is superb....Whether you're a novice or a fanatic, this Bud's for you."
Advantages: impressive neo bop piano work Disadvantages: not to good for people woho like the fusion corea stuff
...One of the classic neo bop avant garde jazz piano trios that emerged in the 60's. ChickCorea gives us with that record, a classic example of neo bop with intense improvisations and high rhythmically complex motives and patterns. The influence from hard bop is obvious all the way through, but also the latin flavour that is the trademark of Corea's paino style, is from times to times implied through the use of latin vamps. The drumming of Roy Haynes is very good as well. Some songs like "Now he sings now he sobs" have become jazz standards by the years. It is recommended to all jazz friends and needless to say this is a must for pianists. A good example of Corea's pre-fusion work....

Advantages: Could have been so good. Disadvantages: Her guests bring nothing to the proceedings.
...Sheryl Crow released a live album, and a DVD at the same time. The DVD was a triumph - sadly, this live record was not.
Recorded in 1999 in Central Park, this was Sheryl's big gig - 12 Sheryl songs, two covers, and a whole host of her friends. Those friends include Eric Clapton, Dixie Chicks, Chrissie Hynde, Sarah McLachlan, Bill Murray, Stevie Nicks and Keith Richards.
It's unfortunate then, that only Sarah McLachlan and those who's contribution is purely musical really add anything to this. Hearing the Dixie Chicks make Strong Enough go country adds nothing to it. It's a shame, but the album could have been so good - Sheryl's live DVD from the Globe is excellent. Buy that instead.
Oh, and the cover photography and sleeve photography are *very* unflattering....

Advantages: a worthy re-issue for its fans Disadvantages: not quite their best
...As time plays tricks on the mind it also can do the same to the ears ,it was a long trip from hearing the batch of fine singles on this album to owning it on c.d ,about 25 years i would say ,musically ,a lot has happened since this albums release in 1982,rap and hip hop were in their infancy ,New Romantics ruled the roost and House music was still mutating and growing somewhere in Chicago, but the years have been kind to "Songs to Remember "its once awkward sounding rhythms and arrangements now sound normal and confident as the vision of pop it aspired to in 1982 was realised many years since .
So,what of its songs ,the opening radio friendly "Assylums in Jerusalem"bounces along in a folksy /reggae mode ,never quite making its mind up but worthy alone for its great chorus and
optimism, the preference for white boy soul was never...
