Review of Renée Fleming - Bel Canto [SACD] by Maestrolover

Advantages: Virtuosic operatic vocalism, unusual repertoire, mad scenes...
Disadvantages: Fleming's voice is maybe not best suited for this...

...is such a personal thing that I think it is only to be expected that one man's meat is another man's poison. So what exactly IS "Bel Canto" - which is the title of this particular CD featuring renowned American soprano Renée Fleming? Simply put: Bel canto is the Italian term for "beautiful singing", but it is specifically applied towards a vocal technique which first developed in the 17th century in Italy and continued to develop towards a peak in the 19th century with many bel canto operas by composers such as Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti - all of whom feature on this CD. It is a very technically based way of singing, where the singer was ideally supposed to have a perfect evenness throughout their range of notes, but most importantly, the ability to use extensive ornamentation (or decoration) as part of and in addition to the melody... Classical voices to relax and uplift
Review of Classic FM Voices 2008 - Various Artists by JoannaPiano

Advantages: Good background listening
Disadvantages: Odd mixture of music on the Uplifting disc

...irritating. 12 Puccini - 'Un Bel Di' from the opera Madame Butterfly. Renee Fleming sings this aria. While I love her voice this is a piece which I have heard too often and it does nothing for me. I don't find it uplifting and I would probably skip the track. 13 Lara - 'Granada'. This is sung by Jose Carreras. Another famoud song which you would probably recognise. When I was a child it was used for an advert for Granada television. An Ok track, but for me it's nothing special. 14 Parry - 'I Was Glad'. This is one I really like. It's also know as the Coronation Anthem and is sung here by the choir of King's College, Cambridge. This definitely qualifies as uplifting in my book, though Parry is perhaps better know for his other stirring composition, Jerusalem. In Conclusion Of this CD set I much prefer the music on the Relaxing... Read review

HISTORY OF TENORS ON ONE CD
Review of The Greatest Tenors of the 20th Century by jameslucjan

Advantages: All the hero's in one
Disadvantages: Mixed sound recordings Sound louder and quieter in places

...fois à la cour d'Eisenach by Alfredo Kraus Very Dramatic interpretation. I'll frustrate the potential buyer by letting this one "sing" for itself!!! Track 7 :Recondita armonia sung by Alfredo Mariotti, Franco Corelli Again this is a mind-boggling performance with Corelli seeming to power away and Mariotti holding him in check. Another example of sprit and soul working together to create this superb collection of sound! Track 8: Mein Herz voll Treue bis zum Sterben sung by Wolfgang Windgassen An interesting rendition of this famous Wagner Piece. Windgassen uses the language to create great warmth throughout the aria. Track 9: Ella mi fu rapita! sung by Carlo Bergonzi An aria from one of the most popular operas (Rigoletto) is sung to perfection by one of my favourite technical tenors. Track 10: Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön sung... Read review
