Rage Against The Machine are one of these great bands. They may not be recognised as this quite yet, but because at the time- and even now- their music was so innovative and ground breaking they will definitely be considered a great band. They are a political band, and this features almost entirely in this album “Renegades”. This album does not have any origional tracks by RATM, as it is a collection of covers presumably of their favourite music which made an impact on them. While I love this album to pieces, it does have mixed results.
Every track in the album is, for want of a better word, funky. This is the funkiest album I have heard for ages! It is so damn cool! Every track on this album is great. Thing is, I can’t honestly compare all of Rage’s covers to the originals because I haven’t heard many of the originals ;o)
You all know that Rage always play really well, and you know that they will have a great taste in music to get that good so it is fair to say that you will like this album, so the only thing left for me to do (since all the tracks are familiar to you) is to compare Rage’s covers to the originals….
I might be asking for trouble here, but I believe that Rage’s covers of the “Street Fighting Man” (Rolling Stones) and “Maggie’s Farm” (Bob Dylan) are superiour. I know what you are going to say, but it is all a matter of taste and I happen to prefer the way Rage have pulled off these two songs- they are funky factor 7 man! WOO! Not that I’m dissin’ the origionals.
But there are turn-offs to the covers as well. Rage’s version of the great MC5 song “Kick Out The Jams” sounds better, but for some reason I feel they have played this too slowly and for an upbeat song it doesn’t do it justice. Also, “In My Eyes” (Minor Threat), I don’t think is as good as the original. The reason? “In My Eyes” is meant to be a really dirty, cheap sounding song. Its punk as it is meant to be, but the Rage version seems far too clean to me. On the other hand though, Zack’s vocals really pull it off well (he sounds really angry lol) and they were justified I guess in making it cleaner so it fits the tone of the rest of the album.
As for the rest of the covers which I’ve heard before, I don’t really rate one over the other to be honest. I know some people will inevitably disagree with my opinions of the covers, but its just what I feel and I’m not trying to start arguments :o)
As in usual Rage style, the cover art is great. However, I have one gripe on things they have left out: credit to the original artists….
I don’t know why they have left these details out… maybe out of some special arrangement with the people who made the tracks in the first place, but it is really the only niggling part of the album for me. I have done a search for the songs I haven’t heard before on Kazaa to find out the originals, but there are still a few blanks. If I’m wrong on any of them or someone else can help me with the others, please let me know and I will amend the op accordingly :o)

...turned down the latter. While Renegades is a superb album, and way beyond the achievements of ninety percent of all other rock bands making records today, it isn’t quite on par with their own work. I consider Renegades to more of a personal album, which sounds strange given that is a collection of covers. The point I make though, is that while the early albums are rants against the problems in government and society today, Renegades is a break ... ...voice on the album, that Renegades was extremely good fun to make and co-produce. When all is said and done, Renegades is undoubtedly essential, be it for a fan of RATM or simply rock music it’s self. The album, as with all RATM, is not instantly accessible, but repeated listening will confirm the ‘classic’ status in your mind, and will soon sit proudly with the rest of your ‘Rage’ collection. The cover comes in two ...

Advantages: Fantastically produced album, with no sub-standerd tracks Disadvantages: Not typical of other RATM albums
Renegades is Rage Against The Machines 2000 album. Being the technical, Internet centric guy I am, I always take instant prejudice to the bands name :). Then I remember they're not a bunch of angry farmers playing homemade banjos, and are in fact a very clever group of people, producing some very hard emotional tracks, and raging against the system.
Ok, so the groups roots are stuck deeply in political activism, and it could easily turn away many ... ...flags.
So whats the Renegades album all about? Well, its actually a collection of cover songs. Most cover albums aren't worth the plastic they're burnt on, but this one is a very special exception. It covers great tracks like "Kick Out The Jams" and "Street Fighting Man", and stamps the Rage style all over them. The songs work very well together, and I usually listen to the album from start to finish.
Theres also some quite diverse tracks on this ...

...and mosh. 4. Renegades of Funk - 9/10 Good remake of the original. Better, even. Excellent chorus, the lyrics are outstanding. That's basically all, really. 5. Beautiful World - 9/10 Slow, but fascinating. One to really relate to, when you are down or whatnot. The song is about everyone being so happy around him, but he wants to cry as it is too good for him. I write messages on money. It's my own form of social protest. A letter printed on paper that no one will destroy Passed indiscriminately across race, class and gender lines And written in the blood that keeps the beast alive. ...to some of their favourite renegades of music, by using tracks previously performed by various artists who RATM admire. So an LP full of covers? Not quite. In fact the only resemblance to previous recordings of the songs would be the lyrics, instrumentally they are pure Rage Against The Machine. Tom Morello is just as innovative on guitar, Timmy C's baselines are just as funky as before, and Zack de la Rocha is more furious than ever on vocals. Some ... ...with great bass-line. Renegades Of Funk: Now if you've heard Afrika Bambitaa's original version this track will come as a bit of a shock. Slowly builds up to another furious bass-line and riff. Possibly the best RATM sing-along song since "F*ck you I won't do what you tell me!" in "Killing In The Name". I'm Housin: For me this is one of the best tracks on the album, second only to "The Ghost Of Tom Joad". Great bass-line, great drum-beat, great solo ...

...Limp Bizkit. Renegades if the band's 4th album and is a cover album. But its unlike your normal cover albums. The tracks are very different to the originals unlike most covers. RATM took the lyrics and have added have added their own style to the tracks. For example track 5 of the album "Renegades of Funk". The original was by Afrika Bambaata, RATM's version is almost unrecognisable from the original. All the tracks are at the least decent. My favourite track is track 5 "Renegades of Funk". Track 5 "Beautiful World" is a track which surprised me as this is very unlike RATM. Its very mellow and Zack actually "sings" instead of rapping in his usual angry manner, which I found ...

Album Notes
Rage Against The Machine: Zack De La Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Tim Commerford (bass); Brad Wilk (drums). Additional personnel includes: Sen Dog, B-Real (rap vocals). Producers: Rick Rubin, Rage Against The Machine, Brendan O'Brien. Engineers: Jim Scott, David Schiffman, Nick DiDia. Principally recorded at Cello Studios, Hollywood, California and The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. "Renegades Of Funk" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Seemingly due to the hasty departure of vocalist Zach De La Rocha, what had originally been intended as a second disc complementing a live set finds its solo release in RENEGADES. Originally born in the lighthearted spirit of cover albums such as Metallica's GARAGE DAYS series, RENEGADES is an assembly of interpretations of protest songs that spans many musical styles. From the funk treatment of the obscure "Pistol Grip Pump" (originally recorded by Volume 10), to the slowed-down, stomping groove of the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams," there is seemingly no song the band can't transform and make their own. Identifying closely with Rage Against The Machine's political ideals are Afrika Bambaataa's "Renegades of Funk," and the previously single-only cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The Ghost of Tom Joad." In what fans might optimistically interpret as a hint of what is to follow, two hidden live tracks round out RENEGADES' 60-plus minute assault.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (12/21/00, p.170) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Not only do Rage understand the sweep of rock and rap history, but they have bold and unusual ways of tearing that history up....executing each song with the roaring, fearless spirit that's been missing in action since these songs were new." Spin (2/01, p.106) - 7 out of 10 - "...[These] songs air the frustration behind the band's united front....acknowledging the pissing-in-the-prevailing-wind nature of their critique..." Q (1/01, p.108) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...Steely energy and stifling seriousness....Those lying closest to their own unsubtle oeuvre, i.e. the Minor Threat and Cypress Hill tracks, are as crunching as die-hards could hope for..." NME (11/25/00, p.33) - 8 stars out of 10 - "...At once brilliant archaeology; a final rewrite of the rage manifesto...revealing the foundation on which they stood: hip-hop and punk, anger and beats..." Melody Maker (12/5/00, p.56) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...The electric crackle of real rage will still Frankenstein your spine and make you quiver with that strange combo of elation and self-disgust..."
