    Tubeway Army released their eponymous debut album in 1978, but Gary Numan who was the soul(!) of the group, was already planning ahead, and he used record company support to further his acquaintance with synthesisers and virtually withdrew from gigging. This may have been hard on fellow group members Paul Gardiner (bass) and Jess Lidyard (drums) but guitarist/keyboardist Numan had never felt comfortable in live performance.
