I was wondering when the new album is going to come out. This album did not disappoint me at all. The title might have been fortunate to be called ‘The Resistance’ since I really could not resist buying this straight away.
The first thing that I liked about is the cover art; a man in front of a multi-coloured circular ball/globe(?). It definitely does bring out the whole album. Also, if you look at it long enough, you will see that the image is going in towards the Earth but as a whole, it just looks like a globe.
01. Uprising This track is one of my favourite in the album. It is quite alienating at some point and very upbeat. This track, I think sets the new album as a totally new different style to Muse’s other album.
02. Resistance This track is my favourite in the album. It has got a mixture of instruments used. I really like the piano opening, quite rhythmic,
and sets the piece as almost like a hymn but the track gets very dynamic once it gets started. The track is also on a quite fast pace, excellent piece when going for a run.
03. Undisclosed Desires This track, I find it quite odd. The tune is rather jumpy but quite an interesting song to listen to.
04. United States of Eurasia This track starts off with keyboard again, and it is quite Queen-like song with almost Indian song mixed into. And, I have no idea why they put a Chopin piece of music at the end because I don’t think it works as a track.
05. Guiding Light This track I quite like and reminded me of Muse’s earlier albums, especially, Absolution. This track is mostly based on bass-guitar and it is quite simple as a whole.
06. Unnatural Selection This track starts off with church organs and then goes on to quite a rocky tune with combination of drums and bass-guitar. The melody is very similar to the older album they have done, Origins of Symmetry. I think this track is quite dynamic; the tune keeps changing quite a lot. I even forgot that this track started with church organ theme.
07. MK Ultra This track again, is based mostly on guitar works. I personally don’t really like it because there is some violin type work (?) in the background and it creeps me out a little. Also, there are too many things going on at once. I find it hard to listen to.
08. I Belong To You This track I quite like based on some keyboard works. It has some enjoyable melody to it. This piece of track is also quite dynamic in pace; it slows down at some point and becomes fast again. One of the strange things I ran into is the lyric which has some French words in it. There is also saxophone playing near the end of the track which I really enjoyed listening to.
09. Exo-Genesis Symphony Part 1 (Overture), Part 2 (Cross-Pollination), Part 3 (Redemption) These three masterpieces is my favourite out of all these tracks. I always listen to these three tracks together and I have managed to merge them into one single file. These remind me of a piano concerto’s pieces, really relaxing, almost like a lullaby. The second bit of Exo-Genesis is my favourite where there is the octave movement within the piano part. I could listen to this movement over and over again. The lyrics of these symphonies are also quite powerful and moving.
Extra: DVD I have watched bits of the DVD and I really enjoyed watching them. It contains how Muse has made each of the tracks and it is quite interesting how they made some special effect sounds. I find some of the makings rather funny and they have mixed the songs with the video so it doesn’t get boring at all. Although there is a title menu with selection of each tracks but the video runs as a whole and does not go back to the menu after each tracks.
In conclusion, I think this album is really successful and powerful but there are some odd tracks however the Exo-Genesis tracks make up for what it is. Even though the album is quite different to the other ones, I still really enjoy listening to it. I still think Muse is one of the best Artists there is. I will always buy their CD’s and will not download it illegally.
