This is Alice Sebold?s second novel. I read ?The Lovely Bones? and decided fairly early on in the book that I liked her style of writing and ordered ?Lucky? from the internet.
This is a true memoir of when Alice was an 18 year old freshman student in 1980s America and was brutally raped and beaten up in a park on campus.
As you can imagine, this book is not an easy read. From the first page the shock of her rape forces the reader to live through the whole ordeal with her. It is quite appalling to read. She is humiliated, degraded and violated in a number of ways under the threat of a man?s knife. He then urinates on her. Afterwards, he cries and says he?s sorry. He makes her ?kiss? him goodbye. He takes her only money ? eight dollars.

The supporting cast is of the highest calibre with Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley playing the competing crime-lords The Boss and The Rabbi respectively. Honey-voiced Freeman brings gravitas to the role and also warmth and confidence that are at odds with his questionable profession. You might argue that this makes him less convincing as a criminal kingpin, but if you take into account that he treats it as a business like any other, it makes sense. As The Rabbi, Kinglsey takes a more overtly sinister approach, creating a reptilian character who is always calculating the odds. As assassin Mr Goodkat Bruce Willis is smooth and laconic, more than fulfilling his largely expository role. It's a decent turn that manages to bring the manifold plot strands together. It's a shame Stanley Tucci isn't given more to do as cop Brikowski. He ...
