As you may have guessed from my latest reviews I am on a bit of an Amsterdam review phase at the moment. As my wife and I visited over xmas we wanted to visit as many places as we could to sample the varied nightlife that Amsterdam has to offer, many friends had recommended Boom Chigao so we thought we would give it a go.
Boom Chicago is a comedy club essentialy, on Leidesplain, which is in the heart of the nightlife and restaurant area, quite near to other attractions such as the Alto Jazz cafe. Very easy to get to by tram, or by foot. Entry is 24 Euro on it's own, or for 36 Euro you get entry plus a meal, though there are some supplements for the more expensive dishes such as Sea Bass. The Return by Victoria Hislop...
Victoria Hislop's first novel was The Island which was published a few years back now and I have ever since reading that been waiting for the next instalment from Hislop. I enjoyed "The Island" so much and it still has a lasting affect on me even now that frankly I was rather disappointed with Hislop's attempt at a second book.
The beginning of the book starts off quite promising and is set in the current times as the book continues on the story of one woman and her friend setting off for dance lessons in Spain and within a few chapters we are transported back to the time of the Spanish Civil War. In the chapters that follow there is a story relating to a Spanish family and their struggles through out this tough time in a war torn Spain. Producers include: DJ Premier, KRS-One, Adam Kudzin, Norty Cotto, Kid Capri. Engineers: Norty Cotto, Adam Kudzin, Eddie Sancho. Recorded at D & D Recording and Battery Studios, New York, New York. Although BDP had basically been a vehicle for KRS' solo vision at least since EDUTAINMENT, RETURN OF THE BOOM BAP is the first full-length release under his own name. As such it marks a significant turning point in his career, effectively stating that even if CRIMINAL MINDED had secured him old-school legend status, KRS was in fact the first new school emcee. Along with Rakim and a handful of others, he took rap away from elaborate call-and-response delivery of fairly simple rhymes towards a soliloquy of complex rhyme schemes and original metaphors. Consistent enough that he never had to worry about whether or not to call it a come-back, KRS nevertheless covered his bets by enlisting the new school's most innovative producer (DJ Premier) to complement his own beats on this solo debut.
