After a well deserved break, No Doubt Returned with their forth album entitled Return Of Saturn, although a strange title, this album is once again crammed with hits!
This was the second album of No Doubts that I bought which included the great come-back single "New" which is a great fast dance type rock track which is still one of my all time faves!
Follow-ups to the return single failed to impress or make it into the top 10. Other releases included Simple Kind Of Life and Marry Me both good tracks but not in my view the best off this album.
Tracks that Impress me especially are Bathwater a boppy little number and a classic in my view, Six feet Under with great Drumming from the band member Adrian Young. Suspension is another great with a spingy sound at the beginning which seems really strange in sounding.
Gwen sings quite a few songs on this album with a less rough voice which is a good contrast giving a more mellower sound. All tracks once more have their own contribution to make to this superb. This album contains a bonus track called Big Distraction which is also good and is an added bonus. This album although went rather un-noticed in the charts, heralds a return for the band which hopefully will keep on churning out pure tracks like this again.
Lets hope for a new album soon!

READ THIS! If you have the album or I have Persuaded you to get this one, Leave the CD play after the bonus track (15) and you will discover another Bonus Track! Yes Another bonus track which is an instrumental track (a contrasting classically sounding track) finishing off the album perfectly!
...are very up beat like Return of Saturn and there are some songs which have that slower ballad feel to them and are yet extremely original. I think this album is going to be massive and the great thing about it is that it can be played over and over agin without becoming tedious. I would recommend this to any No Doubt fan and anyone who enjoys creative music which is not at all run of the mill! ...

...its fairly slow but still has good lyrics and excellent music, as do most of the songs. there are a fewdisappointments such as can't stop staring, which begin to get a little irritating. maybe not as good as tragic kingdom but return of saturn is definatley worth a few listens. ...

Advantages: 15 excellent and original songs from one of the best bands around Disadvantages: may be the last album we hear form them!
This being their fifth album to date, we get to see a brilliant collection of some of NoDoubts finest work, including classics such as Don't speak and Hey baby. And the excellent cover of It's my life making this one of the best albums of all time. It shows all the aspects of NoDoubt's original and memorable talent.Thsitalent has progressed through the years and this album combines the very best of it.
This outstanding mix of madness inspired tracks are taken form the early days of 1992 up until their most recent songs of 2003.
All the songs have been superbly selected from the four outstanding albums the band have created: Tragic Kingdom, Return of Saturn, NoDoubt and Rock Steady. Making this album the cream of the crop. ...
which is an ode to the end of relationships. Here again the use of a variety of instruments and Steffani's original and powerful vocal style providing an interesting mix, which is most certainly conducive to the production of a beautiful song.
All in all this album is the best NoDoubt have produced, and whilst "Return of Saturn" is good, it by no means meets the high standards set by this early and highly original album. I can do nothing now but advise that you get hold of a copy and discover what you have been missing since 1995. ...
Advantages: Fun, lightweight, a number of catchy songs Disadvantages: Too many cooks spoiling the No Doubt broth?
uncool former ska-punk bands.
And it's not that this case of pop revisionism was accidental, either. Indeed, it seems very curiously studied, plotted and methodically executed. A potted history of NoDoubt: formed in 1986, the band bubbled away on the punk circuit for a number of years, with no success to speak of, until 1995 and their 'Tragic Kingdom' album, a massive seller across the globe, spurred on by the anthemic break-up number 'Don't Speak'. And then? obscurity. NoDoubtreturned with 2000's 'Return of Saturn', an album overwrought with introspection and 'sympathise-with-me' lyricism, one which was unequivocally awful and a commercial bomb. It looked like the band were finished. However, they clearly weren't willing to give up their spot in the limelight just yet. Taking their inspiration from a revived hip-hop scene, plus Gwen ...

Recorded at Royaltone, NRG, Hang Suite and Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California; Aerowave, Encino, California. RETURN OF SATURN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Pop-ska rockers No Doubt make their long-awaited return with the follow-up to the hugely successful TRAGIC KINGDOM. The band's fiery dynamic remains intact as vocalist Gwen Stefani's penchant for emotionally charged tales of heartbreak drive the single "Ex-Girlfriend," "Simple Kind Of Life" and "Bath Water." In "The Magic's In The Makeup," Stefani's lyrics speak of yearning to be appreciated beyond surface beauty for who she really is while the band reaches for a thicker sound and more complex arrangements. Illusions and metaphors exploring the darker side of love set the tone of "Artificial Sweetener." "Marry Me" uses a melodic, staccato bass line to drive the reggae-tinged tale of the insecurities and doubts surrounding commitment. In "New" Stefani metaphorically compares fresh batteries to the optimism and excitement of a new relationship. "Too Late" is an atmospheric, bittersweet power ballad while "Staring Problem" throttles with the quirky punk energy that long-time fans will embrace. With two years in the making, RETURN OF SATURN finds No Doubt a tighter, more mature unit, focused more on pop songs and production and leaning slightly away from the ska/horn dominated sound of their past.
Album Reviews
Rolling Stone (1/4/01, p.114) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2000". Rolling Stone (4/27/00, pp.65-6) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A rare achievement: a superstar follow-up that not only betters its predecessor but also radically departs from it....a collection of uniformly well-crafted, vigorously performed tunes that run the gamut from grungy to giddy, playful to pensive..." Vibe (5/00, p.176) - "...Their aggro-ska construct has real legs, thanks to the group's strong songwriting chops....Stefani continues to play her compelling linchpin role...taking the familiar tropes of classic girlie pop, heartbreak, bad-boy attraction, and the matrimonial urge and turns them upside down..." Q (5/00, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...A clutch of well-crafted songs....Pale and sometimes interesting." Melody Maker (4/11/00, p.48) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A great pop album. In a strange incidence of role-reversal, SATURN runs rings around most of its rivals." Entertainment Weekly (4/14/00, pp.71-2) - "...[They] still bounce around on the kind of perky, reggae-inflicted trampolines that can give you motion sickness....concentrating on smoother, layered mid-tempo ballads as creamily textured as extra-thick napoleon pastries..." - Rating: B CMJ (4/24/00, p.24) - "...Once again, Stefani sits at the helm....Success hasn't freed [her] from her heartache, incessant yearning or self-analysis, but it has given the band the confidence to bring their new wave tendencies to the forefront..."
