Reunion - Hollies
The Hollies are certainly one of the most unjustly-overlooked of all the legendary 60s

bands; a cursory listen to any greatest hits selection reveals that the triumvirate of Clarke, Hicks & Nash were equals to Roy Wood or Lennon & McCartney for writing catchy, clever pop songs. Their downfall was their longevity- Graham Nash left for America to make history with Crosby & Stills, and the band soldiered on, but were never the same. In 1983, Nash rejoined for the "What Comes Around" album, and the attendant tour, a document of which is the "Reunion" album here. The band tear through their vintage hits and new album with energy and enthusiasm, and even Nash seems to enjoy himself, at one point proclaiming "The Hollies are back!". Of course the playing is spot-on - perhaps a little too professional- and the vocals- especially Nash's- are as good as in their heyday. The only downside is that, being the 80s, many of the charming touches like the 12-string on I Can't Let Go or the steel drums on Carrie Anne have been replaced with dated sounding synths. Stylistic issues aside, this is still a fine document of a much-overlooked band. - Thom Allott

Advantages: Great music, Great sound Disadvantages: so much beyond this
..." appeared on this album along with many more great tunes.
This album was my first introduction to the Everly Brothers and i have never looked back. I have yet to find an artist(s) that i like better.
In 1973 they parted and both persued solo careers. Before their split they relesed an album called " Take of the seventies" which included great covers such as "Lay Lady Lay" (Bob Dylan) & "The Air That I Breath" (The Hollies)
In 1983 they got back together again for the first time in 10 years when they held their reunion concert.
They released a new single "On The Wings Of A Nightingale" whith which they restarted their Duet career.
Over the years i have been lucky to hear all angle of the Everlys music and if your a fan you will all ready appreciate their entire collection and if not you will only know the recordings that you would hear...

Advantages: It's Buddy Holly - Enough Said! Disadvantages: Unfortunately, Buddy's guitar disappears behind the over dubbing
...Unfortunately after Buddy's death, his Manager, Norman Petty hired the Fireballs, who overdubbed much of the original guitar and music by Buddy & the Crickets. The result is that the original music is so far back in the mix, they might as well have not bothered!
Buddy Holly was without doubt a musical genius, he was experiementing with elementary overdubbing before his untimely and tragic death. Therefore it is a great shame that Norman Petty treated his music this way.
If you want to hear the real Buddy Holly, then there are available collections which have the original undubbed music on them, but you may have to shop around. Buddy's music is far too important and indeed, enjoyable to be treated this way, and you the listener deserve the real thing, rather than a heavily overdubbed version....

Advantages: A brilliant compilation of this bands only two albums. Disadvantages: Poor album cover, could have used the originals.
...it on purpose whereas many of the originals had their lyrical ability severely scrambled by (shall we say), ingestion of hallucinogenic Smarties. The good result is that the whole affair is suffused with silly good humour. No bad thing in my book.
All this may sound a little 'Stars in Their Eyes' but with the exception of two tracks, this isn't so. It's more a case of 'heavily influenced by' rather than 'impersonations of'.
Of those two tracks, "Vanishing Girl" is a direct pastiche of the Graham Nash era Hollies, all harmony lead vocals and chiming guitars, and is very very good indeed. The other, and the real jewel in the Dukes crown is the final track called "Pale And Precious" that is a stunning (not a word I often use) recreation of Pet Sounds/Smile era Beach Boys. In fact it's so good you could think it is easily a bootlegged unreleased...
