The Green Day line-up was different on this record Tre Cool hadn't yet joined, so drums where provided by John Keftimeyer, who is not as naturally gifted as Tre, but is a capable drummer. WQhen I first purchased this album I felt a little let down as I had previously bought 'Dookie' and this did not seem to compare. After giving it a chance I was certainly rewarded as I now feel that this really is a very good album. The guitar work in this album is more complex than that of the more up-to-date albums and the soloing sounds somewhat more impressive. I would say that the main highlights on this album have to be 'Paper Lanterns', 'Going ...
...'Why do you want him?' was a beautiful solo in it which makes you wonder how Billie Joe could write such a good songs when he was just 12 and had not written one before ever. '16' if listened to carefully you will notice that during the verses the guitar tune is very similar to that of 'When I Come Around'. I am a big Green Day fan, and for me to be a "big" fan of something it takes alot of convincing. I started listening to GD after "dookie" (as did everyone else), but when i heard 39/smooth, i fell in love. the lyrics are written like a modern day Shakespear, the compolation and arrangment of guitars and drums will blow your mind. You also must remember that the guys were only around the age of 16 when they recorded this album. it deals w/ all the ...
...bordom and any other obstacal a teenage boy goes through. It helped me when i was 16 and i still listen to it almost more often than their other albums. A must get!! Having written about Green Days Nimrod album and plugged that beyond belief, I feel I should do the same for its predecessor. 1039, is Green Days first album which is a compilation of around four of their EPs. Each one of the EPs a stunner in its own right, but the compilation album just blows these away. Once again, Green Day blows its fans away with a 19 track wonder. This is quite an interesting collection consisting of various Greenday minialbums and b-sides. All of these songs are from before they hit fame with Dookie and the style of music is very different to that of their newer albums. However it is quite an interesting addition to anyones collection. This is Green Day's first compilation album, as it is actually made up of their first 3 EP's (their first real album being 'Kerplunk').
