...hits. It was at No. 1 for six weeks in the UK, but seems to be much less regarded these days. A very underrated song in my book.
4) This is followed by "I Want To Hold Your Hand", another relentlessly cheerful, feelgood tune ("and when I touch you I feel happy inside"). Maybe it's not the most original piece of music ever written, but who cares? Just get out there and dance the night away!
5) Can't Buy Me Love, for anyone who's seen the film of ... ...up images of John, Paul, George and Ringo fooling around on fire escapes in the middle of a field. Many people tend to play it too fast - one interesting thing about the Beatles' songs is that their tempos are often not what you might expect from reading the lyrics.
6) As promised above, we now move on to A Hard Day's Night. This is a bit of a turning point - it has a little bit more of an edge to it than the earlier songs. It might be considered ...

Advantages: Show some songwriting talent. Loads of songs. Disadvantages: Very derivative. Influences extremely evident.
Right. This album was first released 12 months ago amid much hype and "next big thing" media writings. Although I bought it at the time of release I thought it was best to let the dust settle before offering my informed and intelligent view on this work and its' writers. A bit of background first. The Beatles are four young scallies from Liverpool. Paul MCcartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. And very talented they appear to be too, ... ...that this group have so obviously modelled themselves on Oasis it's frightening- but more of that later. The name of the album, "One", is presumably a reference to the fact that this is their first release- not exactly genius but slightly more original than, for example, a simple, eponymous "The Beatles". Will the follow-up be entitled "Two" I wonder? Or even "One 2"? (Actually "One 2 One" would have obvious sponsorship possibilities.) As for the ...

Advantages: Spans all their career and has some real gems, great remastered sound Disadvantages: No. 1 doesn't always mean great! 3 tracks are pretty bad
...just shouldn't have made No. 1. Here's an analysis of each track:
1) Love me do: A little mediocre really, but considering they were new to the recording and music industry, It's not a bad attempt. Good harmonica playing from John, yet this song did not quite convince George Martin...
Sounds like a revamped "I love you" sea shanty. 6/10
2) From me to you: Much more typical of their sound. Uses their classic harmonies. "If there's anything that ... ...seems to running on only 1 or 2 harmonies. All the same, miles better than anything you get today. 7/10
9) Ticket to ride: Is it just me, or is this song great? This time, the intro blends beautifully with the rest of the song. Slightly different way of singing, and varied with great guitar riffs.
There's a sort of fast bits that speed up, but still fit well into the tune. The lyrics correspond very well with the rest of the tune.
By the way, ...

Advantages: Almost every Beatles UK single on one disc Disadvantages: Questionable omissions [see text]
'27 No. 1 singles on 1 CD', proclaims the sticker on the front of this record. Given that the Beatles had only (only!) 17 UK chart-toppers, unless you count the double A-side 'We Can Work It Out' and 'Day Tripper' as two and adjust the score to 18, fair enough. They had 20 in the US, the last being 'The Long and Winding Road', which never was a single on these shores.
A few basic points are difficult to argue with. I can appreciate the views of ... ...our never-ending obsession with them, but they did kick the door of rock'n'roll wide open for this country, sell records on a scale never equalled before or since, and that their back catalogue has always sold well can't be put down solely to EMI's marketing skills. If their records weren't that good, they would have hardly shifted so many units.
Let's get to the record in question. Accepting that all compilation CDs are exploitative to some extent, ...

Advantages: Good value for money as it contains 27 tracks Disadvantages: Does not contain all of their best songs
I have never regarded myself as a big Beatles fan, in fact I would even go as far as to say that I didn’t really like them much at all. This could possibly be because my friends used to harp on about them and pretend to like them just to make themselves look "cool". Or it could be down to my brother who is the biggest Beatles fan around. Every birthday or Christmas there is always another CD that he needs to add to his collection.
So when ... ...of last year, I knew that I would end up buying it for him at some point even though I personally thought that it was just a marketing ploy as we really did not need another compilation on the market. However, I bought it for his birthday and he loved it. Only problem was that I loved it too. Yep, it finally happened - I started to like the Beatles. But why? What was so good about this CD?
Well, firstly it contains twenty seven tracks of which each ...

...it has all 27 number 1 hits the Beatles had from both sides of the Atlantic. I am sure most of you will find that these are all also on the Red and the Blue albums. Will it work? Of course it will! Everyone loves the Beatles, but for those who don’t they are merely just acting against them, like people who smoke when they see a no smoking sign.
On listening to this album one finds that the Beatles, like many great bands started their careers ... ...and ‘Something’ (a non number 1 featured as George Harrison was in the Beatles you know!) All of these songs are different in styles and proved at this time the Beatles were directionless.
It was as though the three writers from the Beatles were flexing their creative muscles through pastiche and stylistic experiment. The end, typically for the ‘Beatles’, was a false one in the form of old songs ‘Let It Be’ and ...

...counter I spy Beatles – 1. My dad keeps going on about how he has original Beatles vinyl and how much it is worth. Figuring that he is too tight to actually play them in case the value drops I decide that this would make a far better present than Willie Nelson Sings About Tax Evasion which I promptly throw over my right shoulder and forget about.
OK less background more opinion I think.
This is a fantastic album. Firstly there are 27 songs ... ...songs that went to number 1. OK it might have been number 1 in Botswana but at least each song was considered good enough for single release. This means that you weed out all the guff that you find on the original albums (hey I like the Beatles but I do not see them as the god like geniuses that many seem to). The next thing is the price. Most Beatles CDs I have seen in the shops range from £13.99 to £18.99 and then the double CDs and special editions ...

Advantages: 25 classic singles Disadvantages: A couple of dud tracks and the fact that everyone owns these songs anyway
...an album full of number 1 singles by The Beatles isn't going to be too bad. Their continued popularity also suggested that such an album would shift millions of units. And funnily enough, both of these predictions are true.
'1' is a collection of The Beatles’ entire collection of number 1 singles from the USA and America. Mariah Carey released an album with a similar concept a couple of years ago. That sold by the bucket-load too, but thankfully ... ...that didn't get to No. 1 but remain classics like 'Please Please Me' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever' have to be left off. Therefore this album cannot truly be called a 'Best Of'.
Which leads me to ask "what's the point?" Obviously the answer is £££. This is not a retrospective look at their entire catalogue like the Red and Blue albums, it is not an interesting sideways look like the Anthology or 'Live At The BBC', it has no artistic merit.
Maybe ...

Who bought it for 's sake? I would have though that any Beatles fan would have either the Red and Blue albums, the Anthology, all the albums, or at least a fair proportion of the material - certainly all of the tracks on this album. As for non-Beatles fans... this album isn't really for them! OK, so younger people may not have the original Beatles albums, and that ... ...outsell everything in sight? With material which hasn't been released *once* before, but at least 3 times? Truly a marketing miracle.
The album itself is great, and I would recommend it to anyone who, like me, like the Beatles a bit but not enough to have splashed out on a larger compilations, such as the red and blue albums (whatever they were called).
Miraculous in two ways then:
1) It manages to compress years of quality music into 80 minutes ...

The Beatles……..What about those Haircuts!! I remember well the rise of The Beatles in the sixties. I was still at primary school when the four Liverpool lads hit the charts with “She loves you Yeah, Yeah,Yeah”. I hated that damn song and never really took to these four guys who were taking the pop world by storm with their new image of smart suits and that Beatle haircut. And those Beatle boots they wore, I remember wearing ... ...they were a terrible style. The next hit “ Twist and Shout” also hit the top spot and The Beatles were well and truly on their way to fame and fortune. In our local Woolworth’s that Xmas they were actually selling plastic Beatle wigs, I kid you not..Another thing that started about the same time was the bubblegum cards. That was a set of 3 cards containing pictures of The Beatles as well as a stick of bubblegum. I still recall my ...

Advantages: 27 classic number 1s Disadvantages: dated
This ambum is a must for any collection.Collecting all The Beatles' 27 Number One singles from both sides of the Atlantic and arranging them chronologically on an album titled '1', has to be one of the most cynical, corny, cash-in ideas of recent times.
As we all know, music fans are suckers for old sounds in new packaging. This isn't meant to take anything away from the music of the Fab Four's making. And having the songs in chronological order ... ...eight year long recording career together.
Debut 'Love Me Do' (which only made it to Number 17 in the UK), 'From Me To You' and 'She Loves You' -while sounding a tad naive and dated these days- are all joyous pop songs from a fresher, younger era. 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'A Hard Day's Night', sees them shedding their pop puppy fat for a maturity and more individual sound which came into its own with the like of 'I Feel ...

Advantages: 27 tracks, £9.99 excellent! Disadvantages: I've got to buy the rest now!
I've never realised what all this hype about the Beatles was about. Maybe it's something to do with being born in 1975, I've grown up with different music and The Beatles were some mythical band that were the greatest at everything they did. Having said that, I do know many of their songs (and was quite impressed) I just wasn't jumping on the band waggon. But whilst pottering round Sainsbury's I saw that they are selling single CD's at £9.99, what ... ...a go. As you probably already know there are 27 number one hits on the album. Now, not all of these are UK hits, but they were all No.1 in either the US or the UK, which is heartening as some greatest hits albums have tracks I'm sure were never in the charts here, maybe in Mongolia or somewhere, but never a UK hit. Anyway, I digress. I listened to the album (as you do having just paid a tenner for it!) and was very, very pleasently surprised. This ...

...compilation of the 27 number 1 hits in both the UK and USA. And therein lies a potential flaw. For many hardcore Beatle-fans this CD just misses out so much.
