Ok people, this is my first attempt at an album review so please be gentle with me. The album I am reviewing is ‘Affirmation’ by Savage Garden. For all those who don’t know who they are - YOU HAVE NO TASTE WHATSOEVER AND I WASH MY HANDS OF YOU!!!!! A “boy band” with real musical talent is a concept that I normally find hard to picture and let alone stomach. Some teenyboppers might now be heading for that unhelpful link in disgust but I’m sorry to break it to you, Westlife really aren’t that talented! In fact, neither are Boyzone, Five (may the rest in peace) or as a matter of fact were Take That and New Kids on the Block. Bands like these are “pretty boys” ...
...a record label! Savage Garden might just be different. You still have that much loved (by teenage girls anyway) boy band persona but at the same time you have a band with a reasonable amount of musical credibility. Affirmation contains some of Savage Gardens most well known and probably best to dat singles including Crash & Burn, Affirmation, I knew I loved you and The Animal Song. All the other singles on the album appear to be lesser known to people who don’t own the album but are all up to the standard of Savage Garden. I’m not quite sure how to describe their songs. There not pop, not love and not ballad, infact, if you put all of that together ...
...forget about the background music! Affirmation is a great example of the strong lyrics as is ‘I knew I loved you’ So, what sort of mood do you have to be in to appreciate the songs. Well, I’d guess it’s best not to be in a depressed mood as you’ll just end up in tears, and don’t listen if you have had a recent relationship split up! The first time I heard this song, I froze. The combination of Savage Garden's excellent sound and the totally groundbreaking lyrics really did stop me in my tracks. Savage Garden have some inexplicable quality that sets them apart from the competition. The more I heard of their music, the more I wanted to hear, and so I bought the album on the strength of my own curiousity. I was definitely not disappointed. You don't need to be a pure pop fan or an intense ballad-lover to enjoy this CD - I'm usually a garage girl and yet this has become a firm favourite! Okay, so most of these songs won't have you gyrating ...
...addictive. They have a great sound and display absolutely massive vocal talent. ...Garden since 1995. I bought Affirmation well over a year ago - and I'm still playing it! This is the best album I have heard in ages. And is definitely worth buying buying because the consistency of the tracks is amazing. There is not a weak track on this album and every song is well written, and sung from the heart.
