This disc is a complete revelation! It seems astonishing that one of the most important works to be written so far in the 21st century should be a concerto for the contrabassoon, an instrument that has almost no solo repertoire but actually possesses an expressivity unrivalled among the contrabass instruments. The newly improved instrument with a range of four octaves is amazing. This is surely a work that will people will still be listening to in 100 years time. The vast orchestra is brilliantly treated, as it is in the Tuba Concerto, and is never allowed to drown out the soloist. This work clearly cements Kalevi Aho's reputation as one of the most significant composers alive today.
