American Idiot (Parental Advisory) [PA] - Green Day

As my title suggests, this is my first taste of Green Day and it has to be said, I have been missing out in the past! As with most people - except those hard core Green Dayers! - I was attracted to the album following the success of their three chart hits: 'American Idiot', 'Holiday', and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'. However, I was not to be disappointed by the other 10 superb tracks on the album. Most albums tend to grow on you over a period of ...
...time that I have instantly taken a like to after the first play. It starts off with the chart hit 'American Idiot', which is loud and fast paced and continues at this pace throughout the album. Each song appears to have been well placed so that it melts meticuously into the next. I knew that this was ganna be an outstanding album, as soon as I heard the debut single from the album, "American Idiot". From beginning to end, the lyrics reveal a story about a young rebellious teenager who goes by the name of "Jesus Of Surburbia." And there, stands the title track of the second song on the album. Jesus Of Surburbia-a 9 minute rock opera, taking you through surburban America. This is when the real talent of the trio really shows ...
...clearly very talented. The punk style of Dookie is still present in the album, but mature and somewhat more "mainstream" sounds have really made the number one album, what it is today. I was warned by some friends before I first listened to this album that it was different... but different in what way? For those "die-hard" fans out there you'll have realised that the Green Day sound has changed when you listen to this one, and for the better in my opinion but to the disagreement of many others who prefer their earlier albums. I truly love this practical album as well as the early album Dookie yet it seems that everyone knows Green Day (Bille, Mike and Tre) because of one there more popular song "American Idiot" which is not surprising with its remember-able lyrics which teenager can get a hold of and throw out with. This is a long awaited return to the brilliance last seen on 'nimrod'. 'American Idiot' musically could have come from any Green Day album since 'Kerplunk', however lyrically it is a step-up and a shift into a political outlook. 'Holiday' is another politically minded track that features a simple riff that could have come of off a track from 'Warning'. 'Jesus of Suburbia' and 'Homecoming' are the masterpieces off of this album. both are over 9 mins ...
...- these two songs alone make the album worth buying. 'Wake me up When September Ends' is a ballad that almost compares to the great 'Good Ridance (Time of Your Life)' and deserves more credit than it has been given in a lot of reviews. The other tracks including 'Extrodinary Girl', are all brilliant and this deserves to rank up there along with 'dookie' as one of their greatest albums. ...

My boyfriend introduced this album to me - and I just put it down to another one of his rock albums that I would be forced to listen to. How wrong was I?! This album begins with the massive hit "American idiot", wondering how the rest of the album could live up this high a beginning - i was intent to listen on - only to be pleasently surprised finding a few hits including especially tracks 4 and track 11 - has got to be the best song I have heard ...
...just to hear these 3 songs imagine if you can the video for "when spetember ends" the nice slow start is a couple carrying on as couples do - then the guy goes to the war - carrying on the big middle/end where you can imagine war images - fighting etc, My favourite quote from this song - apart from the title has to be"drenched in my pain again" - this sums up completely the feeling regarding the atrocities of what happened. If you were in a band you would want to start your set with "American Idiot". Simply-crafted, powerful chords and thumping drums - turn your CD player up and feel your heart flutter and your ribs vibrate... Their best CD by a mile.... all sung and played with power and emotion. Older music fans will compare this with Stiff Little Fingers "Inflammable Material", the same gritty, powerful guitars, passionate and gutsy vocals and thumping up-tempo ...
...top of that, Green Day show that they can vary the tempo and pluck the notes as well as thrash out the chords. Interesting 'concept' element to the CD too. Look, let's be honest about this..... This is not a record for deep, probing analysis... don't sit there reading this... go out, buy it and turn it up loud... dance, shout, sing, play air guitar, whatever... give your neighbours a treat!!!!! ...

What I was most happy to see was, that Rob Cavallo is back in the producer's seat.
