American Idiot - Green Day I have been reviewing some of my favourite albums, and have been working my way up to this one! This is in my humble opinion is the greatest album in the history of music. Now I know very few people will agree with me on this and that's fine, we are all entitled to our own opinions and lets be honest, that‘s what makes life interesting. When I bought this album 5 years back in 2004 I never really expected it to be that good. I have always like Green Day but always felt they weren’t quite punching their weight. On this album they put everything together and made rock ... more

Following 2000’s release of ‘Warning’, fans were left with the distinct feeling that something was seriously wrong in the Green Day camp - the lyrics were heart-felt (almost vomit inducing in some cases), the sound was far more mellowed and the promotion for the record was virtually non existent. What these same fans hadn’t previously comprehended was that the members of the band were now in their late 20’s and couldn’t portray themselves as the same snot nosed punks that 1994 had seen them to be - they had grown up, and with that, as had their music. Billie Joe Armstrong was still the master ... more

I first heard this on MTV’s The Leak, a section of their web page where they preview an album in its entirety the week prior to its official release. Not being one to really take notice of MTV, it took pure luck to come across it, but being the huge Green Day fan that I am, I had to spoil it for myself and have a listen. So, as the tracks went by, my heart raced faster with every minute, listening to the finest music that Green Day have ever made. With the exception of ‘Basket Case’ and ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’, this could easily be Green Day’s very own greatest hits. Being from the ... more

Ok, I know this album has been around for some time, but I felt compelled to write this after rediscovering it in my CD collection and listening to it constantly on my way to and from work for about three weeks now! BACKGROUND ------------------------------------------- Green Day formed as part of the California punk scene and are Billie Joe Armstrong (Vocals, Guitar), Mike Dirnt (nee. Mike Pritchard, Bass) and Tre Cool (nee. Frank Edwin Wright III, Drums). They released their first album 39/Smooth in 1989, followed by Kerplunk in 1992. It was only with the release of Dookie though that Green ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some of the softer songs arent quite as good

Greenday, the very name of the band seems to signify punk rock and grunge music before anyone has even listened to them, its the band gets pop punk addicts buzzing to the sound of theyre own crackling Neurons and will often lift the eylids of even the most hardened death metaller. Greenday are a punk/rock/pop punk outfit that have ben around since 1989/1990 and came on the scene just a few years after another great punk band, The Offspring. However theyre music styles and vocal sounds are both very different and both unique. Greenday consists of a basic band make up of a lead singer with a ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None whatsoever

It was in late 1993 that three angsty, Acne-ridden 20-nothings from California walked away from their small fry record label to take a crack at the big time. With Nirvana’s chugging riffs being emulated on six strings across the world, Warner wanted to cash in on the explosion of alternative punk-rock by unleashing their own smell of teen spirit on an unsuspecting public. Green Day were their answer. The band’s first major label offering, Dookie – a 40 minute journey through whores, headcases, and masturbation – smashed all sales predictions within weeks; Warner’s gamble had hit jackpot ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not many

One of the most bizarre spectacles of the American Presidential election of 2004 was undoubtedly the sight of Democratic Presidential hopeful John Kerry sharing a stage with Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool, collectively known as Green Day, a punk band who had previously demonstrated a very limited knowledge of politics, preferring instead to sing anthems about marijuana and masturbation. The answer to how this came about lies with the band's captivating, rather political album 'American Idiot'. After their under-appreciated and relatively unsuccessful 'Warning' (2000) album ... more

Advantages Advantages Its GREEN DAY!!! *squeals*

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I can think of

American Idiot is Green Day's return to the music world after their last release of International Superhits back in 2001. I liked many of the songs on their last album, although would not have really considered myself as a big fan of Green Day. On the other hand, I totally love this album, although when I first heard it was not entirely a "huge" fan of Green Day although I did like most of their stuff. This album has developed my interest in Green Day and as a result, I'm soooo jealous I've missed out on tickets for the bands gig at Glasgow's SECC next year! :( Anyway, on to the album ... more

Following a comment left by a fellow reviewer claiming Green day are not a real punk band I felt as though I had to let off some steam and justify why this is one of my favourite albums of all time. Green Day are an American punk rock three some (Billy Joe Armstrong, vocals and guitar, Mike Durst, bass and Tre Cool on drums). They generated a massive world wide fan base from thier million selling debut Dookie and have followed with three other studio albums. The last one, warning only recieved moderate reviews from both critics and fans alike. Plus with the added pressures of band life Green ... more
