Advantages: Amazingly imense lyrics, very thought envoking Disadvantages: Bass is barely audable, NO BURTON, dull sound
...Metallica on 25th August 1988 and was the first to include bassist Jason Newsted as this was the first album released by the band after the tragic death of former bassist Cliff Burton. The album is infamous for its almost inaudible bass sound (the band had yet to get over Burton’s passing) and to me is duller and less lively than previous Metallica albums but I don’t mean that as boring just that the sound itself has always come across dull to me ... ...is full of amazing riffs and probably has the most complex track structure of all Metallica albums. The album itself has sold over 8 million copies in the USA alone. It was also nominated for the best hard rock/ metal performance Grammy award in 1989 but was beaten with much controversy to Jethro Tull who didn’t even turn up because they didn’t think they had a hope of winning. The album itself deals with topics such as injustice, war and insanity ...

...unique album from the others, and I at least consider it to be their "heaviest" (in terms of riffs and double bass pedal whacking). The album was the first the band promoted with a music video and single release, a practice they had previously been against, for the phenomenal and mould-breaking "One," and it was undoubtedly due to this song that the album scored a chart position of 6 on the US list. The first official album to be made following the ... ...strong Metallica themes of protest, and features what are probably the strongest statements the band have ever made in their songs, against the themes of war, suicide, insanity and the judicial system. There is also an instrumental in memory of Cliff, featuring a short extract from some of his poetry, read by James. At first appearance, nine tracks may not seem like value for money, but with two songs approaching the ten minute barrier it is more ...

Advantages: Amazing thrash metal album Disadvantages: You can't hear the Bass guitar
...album Metallica have ever made, and is the first with new Bass player Jason Newstead. Unfortunately for Jason (and everyone who has listened to it), the Bass is non-existant! Strangely enough, the sound is very different from the previous three, thus adding to its originality. The guitars are heavier and James Hetfield’s voice is more brutal and raw.
It starts off with “Blackened”, a song about the death of Earth, and just about everything living ... ...who has had his arms and legs blown off and has been blinded and deafened by a landmine in the War. James Hetfield shouts the following lyrics with ferocity:
“Landmine… Has Taken My Sight
Taken My Speech
Taken My Hearing
Taken My Arms
Taken My Legs
Taken My Soul
Left Me with Life in Hell”
Nearing the end of the album, at number eight is “To live is to die”, written by ex Bass player Cliff Burton. It is a beautifully melodic song, and the ...

Advantages: Metallica doing what they do best - Thrash Metal! Disadvantages: Production qualities could be better.
...is a lot more crushing and technical (riff wise) than any of their other output, and lyrically more profound.
To me a lot of the riff work is bordering on death metal technicality and heaviness, while still retaining the basic thrash metal framework and blistering solos.
The songs are also a lot longer than usual and therefore have plenty of time to expand and develop, but never become tiresome. The guitars have a wonderful crunch, and if you play ... ...particular was distraught with grief, and found it impossible to come to terms with even years later. For a while the band considered carrying on without a bass player, but eventually decided on Jason as a replacement. The lack of bass is not down to bad production so much as James eliminating it because the thought of Jason taking over from his best friend was too much to contemplate.
It is hard to pick a standout track because they all have their ...

Advantages: James's voice evolution, Jason has joined the band Disadvantages: heavy distortion on james's voice, you can't hear Jason, no more Cliff
...voice has stated to change, and they were trying to make it sound like it did... trust me it doesn’t work... all in all I think that blackened is probably one pf metallica worst sounding songs...
The title song comes next, starting at a rather battery like pace, with a kind of medieval street mandolin playery kind of sounding section, before picking up pace & becoming much more heavy (although it'd be heavier still if I could hear the bass!!). ... ...album, Eye Of The Beholder, and another fade in, although this time it fades in at full pace rather than slower... James starts singing... wow... now you can hear that his voice has really started to change... but you can also hear the studio distortion too... which is rather annoying... this is actually a very good song, with a number of good pace changes that fit in well with the song, and it's very contradictory lyrics...

Blackened 06:41
Hmm well as the first track i was very interested in this one seeing as i mentioned in previous reviews on music i don't normally like opening tracks on albums they tend to dissapoint me, i can't say this one dissapointed me because obviously i was expecting bad music from what i had heard. But no i was thoroughly interested. The beat ... ...fingers unconciously...i did an experiment and thats how i got my dad to like metallica, easy lyrics to remember...amazing beat. One 07:27
As mentioned in another review of mine on Metallica this song is on Guitar hero III and was made for a film called Tom(amazing film) i love the start of this track with the hints of spanish guitar about 02:15 into the song the electric feel comes in. The beat is a simple but effective one Lars is amazing at his ...

Advantages: Has 'One' On It Disadvantages: Couple Of Tracks To Long
...Lyrics fit the song brilliantly and are extremely well written. Overall a good opening track to set up the rest of the album.
2. ... And Justice For All (9:44)
Again great heavy guitaring, although more purposeful in this. Again lead guitar reins supreme with some great sounds. Lyrics although well written and a little repetitive, which in turn make the song a little long, but that doesn't deflect from the fact that it's well written.
3. Eye Of ... ...rhythm throughout, both from guitars and drums. Lyrics although simplistic are good and work well in the context of the song. Overall great heavy 'play loud' song.
4. One (7:24)
An unbelievable song. Starts off slow and moves to quick sharp guitaring in the middle that is great. Drumming is also exquisite, and done mostly with feet. Lyrics are also sublime and extremely thought-provoking. Definitely the best song on the album and worth the price ...

Advantages: One of metallica's best albums, cool cover art Disadvantages: Sound Quality not brilliant, very little bass
GENERAL INFO
And Justice for all or AJFA as it often known was metallica's 4th album and their last thrash album before the commercial metal self entitled album metallica. This album is the first metallica studio record (not including the garage days E.P) with Jason Newsted who joined the band after bands ex bassist Cliff Burton (R.I.P) died in an tragic bus accident in 1986 while the band was on tour in sweden. FIRST IMPRESSIONS
My first impression ... ...cool concept and portrayed the material on the album really well. When i first listened to this album my favourite songs were Blackened, One, Dyers Eve and To live is to die. On a negative note the sound quality wasnt great.

...starts off with backwards guitars and then flies into a rant about nuclear winter. The song also includes the finest lead work ever played by Kirk Hammett. Lawyers then come in for a pounding on the title track, which is fine by me. If there’s one criticism of this track, and a lot of the album as well, is that it really shouldn’t have been one song, it sounds like three songs stuck together. Three good songs though. …And Justice For All is an album ... ...with short attention spans but if you have the patience and can tolerate the production it’s well worth getting. But if you’re only experience of Metallica is with their latter albums and you want to see what they were like during the thrash days then try Master Of Puppets first. ...

Advantages: It's Metallica, quite simply. Amid much criticism from the American public in their early years they still knock out such fantastic, original tracks. Well worth purchasing Disadvantages: Bass is too quiet depending on how you like your metal but doesn't do much to spoil sound
...recent quitting of the band and so his bass was turned right down on this record. There is certainly less bass than other 'tallica cds but don't let this put you off.
Broken, thrash metal is the dominating theme for the tracks on the album which is what makes it so appealing to me, so if you go for that it's already well worth a listen. The defining moment is clearly the award winning 'One': everyone I know that is into metal is into this track. ... ...Cliff Burton amid typical catchy and well-worked guitar riffs you become accustomed to with Metallica. This time, however, they do become mildly repetitive yet not enough to make you reach desperatley for the skip button.

Advantages: Hetfield's new voice, Classic songs (e,g, One) Disadvantages: Flat mix with very little bass guitar being audible
...The music was more structured and polished, they were starting to grow beards and there was a new member to the band. However, this new member, Jason Newsted, may as well have not been on the album. Instead of the clearly defined bass riffs in the past by Cliff Burton this was just a flat wall of sound. You need an incredibly well trained ear to hear the bass guitar at all, something that I don't have.
Aside from that the album is amazing. The lyrics ... ...there last mixture of Speed and Thrash metal. It carries on very strongly from the precedent set by 'Master of Puppets' and 'Ride The Lightning' where their music cane into its own.
This album wasn't perhaps the best debut album for their new bass player but it is certainley worth having just for the power of the lyrics and sheer aggression that is contained in the guitars and Hetfield's new voice. ...

Advantages: One of the best albums of it's era. Disadvantages: Long complexed songs put some people off and the production is not amazing.
...this isn't catchy guitar hooks and sing-a-long choruses.
This is one for eshablished Metallica fans only I'd say. If you haven't listened to much Metallica this is probably not a good place to start; however if you like Metallica's earlier album such as 'Kill 'em All' and 'Master Of Puppets' you will more than likely enjoy this.
