...the front, if you travel around it and look behind there is blood and flesh. This perhaps is as good an expression of the contrasting nature of deftones' melodic/heavy sound, which is integrated seamlessly in this album. This really is a great album, and makes a perfect companion to "adrenaline" and "white pony". When the Deftones first came onto the scene, it was with more of a whimper than a bang. This was no fault of theirs, however, as their debut album 'Adrenaline' was a fine collection of tortured vocalising and blunt-edged riffing. 'Around The Fur' is even less commercial than 'Adrenaline' but pushes the intensity and melody levels up one notch higher. Their ever-cool frontman Chino Moreno manages to wring out every different noise from his throat ...
...song. For example, 'Lotion' is completely crushing; staccato riffs over a whitewash of vocal screams, that is, until the gorgeously melodic chorus occurs which changes the feel of the entire song. The subject matter is similar to that of their debut but mixes in some weird sexual references ('Lhabia') and Chino's relationship with his wife ('Mascara' and 'Dai The Flu'). ...While it might seem that around the fur takes a much more subtle aproach to the music than adrenaline did, theirs something eerie and wonderful about this album. With memerable songs suhc as my own summer and head up, this album is heavy but in a clever and thoughtful way. This is a great CD by the mighty Deftones. If your a hard-rock/nu-metal fan this cd will blow you off your feet, although at first it doesn't seem to great, after intense listening you will realise what a great cd it actually is. Right from the start with the song featured on "The Matrix" is "My Own Summer (shove it)" which is a great song, but not at all the best on the album. The downside is it might make you feel a bit "sickly" if your not used ...

I bought this album after buying White Pony and didnt really know what to expect. I had heard My Own Summer on one of the Matrix soundtracks and after discovering it was on this album and liking what i heard on White Pony, went for it. It surprised me with tracks like Mascara and I really love this album due to Be Quiet and Drive. This isn't the Deftones first album it is their second, this is a follow on from the Tones debut album adrenaline which really did pack a punch in the Nu Metal Genre, well this album returns with the same kind of effect.
