...that gives great piano).
August and Everything After (A&EA) is Counting Crows' first album. It was followed by Recovering the Satellites, Across a Wire and the most recent album release, This Desert Life. I was fortunate enough to see Counting Crows on their Recovering the Satellites tour at the Albert Hall in 1997. It was fantastic and would take ages to describe because when they play live, they alter practically all of their songs. If I ever ... ...(their live album) then I’ll talk more about it then.
Counting Crows - on this album - are comprised of Adam Duritz (lead vocals, piano and harmonica), Matt Malley (bass, vocals and guitar), Charlie Gillingham (piano, Hammond organ, accordion, chamberlain and vocals), Steve Bowman (drums and vocals) and Dave Bryson (guitars and vocals). All of the tracks (words AND music) on this album were written by Adam Duritz. Released in 1993, A&EA features ...

Advantages: Great mixture of songs, very talented band Disadvantages: None for me
Counting Crows are an American band that never really made it big in this country which is a real shame as they are so talented! They were formed back in 1990 and are still together after all these years! They tour the UK every couple of years and although they are my favourite band of all time I have not yet seen them in concert as I am not a fan of crowded places! The album 'August and Everything After' was released back in 1993 and it was the ... ...now! I listen to this album on a regular basis even today and never get bored of it as it is still my favourite! The tracks are as follows: ===1. Round Here ===
A brilliant guitar riff opens this track which is repetitive throughout but not annoying. The song is very simple yet effective. Some great lyrics such as "we talk just like lions but we sacrifice like lambs". A great opening track to the album and one of my favourites. 10/10 ===2. Omaha ...

Advantages: Its simply a beautiful album Disadvantages: Some times mildly deppressing
Released in 1993 this is the album that brought Counting Crows into the public spotlight. Now 11 years on just as they release their greatest hits I feel the urge to listen to some Counting Crows and this is the album I decided to listen to….
The album is full of soft long lullaby like songs, the singing is so soft and gentle in places that you could just fall asleep listening to it, in other places the singing is more upbeat and you cant help tap ... ...accompanied by the slow plucking of the guitars and the relaxing beat of the drums, the more upbeat songs have strumming guitars and a nice steady beat.
The lead singer really is a highlight of this band, his vocals are so soft and relaxing and the lyrics are heart warming and moving. The lyrics really are the key part of the album and they are sung beautifully, they raise your spirits and they make you feel a indescribable sense of sympathy.

Its always gonna be the best because it was the first and an old boyfriend introduced me to them and that relationship might not have lasted but my love for the Crows has.

I bought this album over five years ago and have just downloaded all the songs from Napster(see my review) so I can listen to it at work. This is undoubtably one of my favorite albums of all time. Each and every song has great lyrics and especially in the case of Mr.Jones a catchy riff. Whilist I have to agree that it is a little on the depressing side I still fully recommend checking it out especially if you're sick and tired of crap manufactured ...

Advantages: Absolutely Everything. Disadvantages: Can't think of any.
I was only quite recently introduced to the music of Counting Crows by a friend of mine, and now they are one of my favourite, most listened to bands...in particular this album is almost never out of my CD player and I have it MP3d onto my computer to listen to it while I work, it really is that fantastic.
Adam Duritz is a man who can just reach inside of him and display so much emotion in his voice that it adds an even more incredible depth to ... ...main chunk of the album is formed of mostly slower tempo songs, which is perhaps why I like the album so much, as the songs really connect to me on an emotional level. Songs like the opening track "Round Here" (I dare any band to try and create a better song), "Anna Begins" and the absolutely heart-wrenching "Raining in Baltimore" are signs of a band and songwriter that really know what they are doing and are not afraid to hold back anything.

Advantages: the perfect album for doing nothing to Disadvantages: not to everyones tastes unfortunately and they're much bigger in america than over here
I have had this album for years (actually I haven't. I had to get it again because some punks stole it from my car) and it has been one of my favourite albums ever since I bought it.
The album is near perfect. Counting Crows have a kinda bluesy pop sound, but they can also rock out with the best of them.
Singer Adam Duritz has the perfect voice, and it is perfect suited to the songs that the band write.
The one that you may have heard, Mr. Jones, ... ...album came out, is one of the more upbeat songs on the album and for that reason is one of my favourites, although the Counting Crows style is more suited to melancholy songs.
This album definitely ranks in my top 10 favourite albums of all time. I can't stop listening to it at the moment. ...

Advantages: Great songs, great to sing to, great to play to and rocks version of easy listening. Disadvantages: A bit dark and depressed in places but moreover suffering from a lack of warmth, but only in the recording.
I don't know about you, but in England, Counting Crows are a lot less known than I think they should be. First coming to prominence with the brilliant (and simplistic) Mr. Jones, the band have fast established themselves as an excellent, and one of the most varied, live bands, but they still don't have the recognition I think they deserve. The album is a wealth of slow rock songs, simple and clean, very crisp in the recording and sometimes lacking ... ...see why it wasn't the smash abroad that it could have been. The simple answer is live tours. When (and DO go) you see Counting Crows in concert you see a band transformed into the most emotional rock band you'll ever see. The vocal's are so full of feeling, you think Adam Duritz will cry, and the music is different everytime, based on the album recordings, but always with a view to random length variations depending on the mood. As such, the album ...

Advantages: This is simply a beautiful album with no weak links Disadvantages: You will buy other CC albums and be left a little dissapointed
August and everything After sits comfortably in my top five favourite albums of all time. For your own interest and to show the quality of this superb album, my list reads:
1) OK Computer, Radiohead
2) Counting Crows: August and everything After
3) The bends, Radiohead
4) Manic Street Preachers: The holy bible
5) Defnitely Maybe: Oasis
This album is immense and actually the only album other than OK computer which I don't skip a song. So why ... ...always say the key to a good album is a good entrance, if thats true, Round Here (Song 1) fulfills every criteria
This song is faultless, the moody introduction of the Hammond organ sets a stunning resonance to which an uncomplicated but beautiful guitar line comes in, your left hanging for a few seconds until the distinctive Adam Duritz (lead singer) catapaults you into his story of love and regret...............

Tenuous link there . August and Everything After was made at a time where the biggest rock bands in the world were all hard rock acts, such as Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Stone Temple Pilots. With their cross between folk and alternative rock they created a niche for themselves and huge success followed. This album (one of the biggest sellers of the nineties in America) is driven by several tracks, the fabulous ... ...and most original rock tracks of the last ten years; the soul gripping "Round Here", and "Anna Begins". Other tracks on the album like "Time and Time again", "A murder of one", "Ghost Train" and "Raining In Baltimore" all follow on seamlessly. It's a very slow and mellow album, which is a welcome change of pace from all the hardcore, grunge albums that were making the rounds at the time. The album still sounds as fresh today as it did when it was ...

It doesnt matter that this album was released years ago, because this is by far one of the best of Counting Crows. I have owned this Cd for years and it is always one i'll go back to. Lyrically it is briliant, the tracks are catchy and yet mellow and easy listening and you can not get enough of Adam Duritz' haunting voice. This is definately a Cd for a cold winters day.
