At last, an album from someone with actual talent! I have been so tired of all the manufactured and rehashed pap which has recently adorned the British music scene, and when I first heard this album, it was so refreshing! I first heard 'You're Beautiful' on the radio at work, and was immediately moved by the lyrics, the melody, and the unique voice that is James Blunt. I am not one to usually buy an album on the basis of one song (I have been let ...
...but on this occasion, I took a chance. And it paid off. The whole album is refreshing and new, and each track seems to speak directly to the listener. Blunt's voice is very distinctive, and each song is sung with feeling and honesty, you can truly believe that he has been in each of these situations and is sung from the heart. Personally, I think the album is ok - even bordering on good - but my main criticism of it would be the similarity of a lot of the songs. So much so that I find it impossible to give a track-by-track analysis and find enough to say about each song. Most people will be familiar with the album's signature track, You're Beautiful, ...

...time. I always think back to Urban Hymns by The Verve - it checks in at a healthy 72 (or so) minutes. Albums should be in at the 60 minute mark. This is a represantative body of work! So, Back to Bedlam is a good debut, but it is a cop out. Its 2/3 hour long, and basically its 2/3 of an album. We will not see this guy at No.1 in the album charts for his next release. I'm not the type of person who buys many albums, but after hearing to a few tracks I decided to buy it and see what it was like. I wasn't disappointed. Most people will probably buy this for the excellent, though slightly cliched 'you're beautiful' and 'good-bye my lover', and in terms of chart hits this album is rich, but the real gems are to be found in the lesser known songs. "No Bravery" is a chilling but beautiful piece about a warzone, and ...
...Another factor which may convince you to get the album may be that the tracks are often more comprehensive than the radio versions, particularly in "Wiseman" which features a stunning acoustic guitar solo. One thing to note is that some of the songs contain some explicit lyrics censored on the radio edits.
