...Dave Grohl. 1997 release, ‘The Colour & The Shape’ was the second album release from the band which Grohl put together in 1994 after his Nirvana heyday, and it was without doubt more commercial than their debut. When he put the band together, he had the confidence to be the front man, and not hide behind a drum kit unrecognized as he had done for so many years before.
The line up on this album is different from the one you see today. Grohl is and ... ...bass providing talent, and the humour behind a lot of the videos that the band release. At the time of release, Pat Smear was the guitarist and William Goldsmith was the drummer, albeit only on two tracks, and Grohl drummed the rest. They have now been replaced by first Franz Stahl and now by Chris Shiflet and my wife’s favourite Taylor Hawkins. The album opens with a less than 90 second blast of a track called ‘Doll’. When I say blast, I do not ...

Advantages: Twelve incredibly fine tracks feature here. Disadvantages: One track from this album is really quite disappointing.
'The Colour and the Shape' is the second Foo Fighters album which was released through Capitol Records in 1997. The album possesses the track 'Monkey Wrench' which seems to be quite a popular one with the vast majority of major fans of the band I've come across in the past; I personally do not derive much enjoyment whatsoever from listening to this one but still find this album to be hugely enjoyable and highly entertaining on the whole. The album ... ...music to begin this 'The Colour and the Shape' album with and I for one absolutely love it.
This album possesses such incredibly well put together pieces of music as 'My Poor Brain', 'Everlong', and 'My Hero' also. I think of this bunch it would definitely have to be 'My Poor Brain' that appeals to me most here. The track ranges between supremely quiet and incredibly loud; there are explosions of sound throughout the track and always the music created ...

Advantages: It's the Foo Fighters Disadvantages: Nothing
...going to review is ‘The Colour And The Shape’, and yes Polly I know it’s yours and I do promise to give it back eventually.
Doll. Messed up song that in my opinion makes you want to think about slitting your wrists, but what do I know about music? (It’s supposed to be a love song?) Nothing really I’m tone deaf but i've never let that hinder my judgement.
Monkey Wrench. A brilliant song that really gets you going, and ... ...was released off this album. A good fairly heavy track which gets your feet and head going.
Hey. Johnny Park! A slower song compared to Monkey Wrench but still an excellent song which makes you want to close your eyes lye back and soak up the melodic tones of a true masterpiece.
My Poor Brain. Slow yet heavy ish, in two minds about this song really as its in two minds about itself. On one hand its trying to be a soft slow girly song, but in the ...

...about their second album 'The colour and the shape' which was released on 02.05.1997 officially seven years ago and yet as the years have gone on the foos haven't changed one bit, they're still a brilliant rock band!
If you have not read my first review on the foo-fighters album then i shall say that the band members themselves are:
Dave Grohl: guitar/vocal
Nate Mendel: bass
Taylor Hawkins: drums
Chris Shiflett: guitar

1. Doll:
This song starts of really slow and quiet with Dave singing very gently accompanied by a guitar until the drums come into effect and the song gets slightly louder. Just when you think things are about to kick off, the next song begins so all in all this track is slightly pointless with it being 1.23 long.
2. Monkey Wrench:
A quick and loud start to this song with high pitched notes from the guitar and drums ...

...they were really like. The Colour and the Shape includes Monkey Wrench, which is one of the amazing singles.
The album starts with Doll, a short ballad about bad luck. A nice introduction to the album, and this is the ideal song to start with, as I am a great believer in starting with a short, slower song, and then bang…
This album does this with track two being Monkey Wrench. Heard of the Foo’s? Then you must have heard Monkey Wrench. ... ...It has a great finale towards the end, which, if you enjoy that kind of thing, allows you to go a bit barmy and sing, well, shout the words at the speakers! "One last thing before I quit, I never wanted anymore than I could fit into my head, I still remember every single word you said and all the SH*T that somehow came along with it, still there’s one thing that comforts me since I was always caged AND NOW I’M FREE!" ...piece, the album entitled The Colour And The Shape is a rip-roaring ride into the world of the Foos.
The album though while heavily guitar based also has some beautifully crafted softer tracks much to the bands credit, and as the album was released back in 97 you should be able to track it down for the very reasonable price of £10.
The Tracks
First up is a track called Doll and oddly for an opening track it only lasts one minute and twenty-three ... ...is musical a very simple piece but it is the lyrics you should pay attention to here a nice wee track.
The album really starts for me with Monkey Wrench, as soon as the track opens you are immediately dragged into a thrash of guitars and sublime drum beats, Dave does his best to sing on this track be still resorts to a wail towards the end of the track.
Track 3 is Hey. Johnny Park! The track is a great example of the kind of lyrics the Foo Fighters ...

Advantages: Their best album yet Disadvantages: "Walking After You" isn't as good as X-Files movie version
The Foos have done it again. This album is truly superb. It opens with "Doll", a really cute little tune that is over before you know it, and then bursts into the fantastic single, "Monkey Wrench". The standaout tracks are all over the place, "Hey Johnny Park" (weird title I know) is a great rock track with a huge chorus and beautiful little quiet verses. "February Stars" is another obligatory epic, which does seem to drag on a bit, but is excellent ... ...bizzare time signature, and including a fantastic drum track. One of my favorites is "Walking After You", a very quiet pretty little track, with a great little sliding acoustic guitar riff. "My Hero" is another quality song, and "Enough Space" is particularly reminiscent of Nirvana. I could go on. Basically the songs themselves are all very good.
The production of this record is a clear progression from the eponymous debut. The guitars fill loads ...

Advantages: Everlong, Monkey Wrench, My Hero, Walking After You. Disadvantages: None
The Colour And The Shape was like a lot of band's second albums, it was going to make or break them, thankfully it made them and it is over all a great album. You can tell the band put a lot more time and effort into this album that they did with the first Foo Fighters album. The really great songs on this album are Monkey Wrench, My Hero, Everlong (wow) and Walking After you. And the other stand out type songs are 'Hey Johnny Park, My Poor Brain, Up In Arms, February Stars and New Way Home. The first song is 'Doll' this is like an soft intro and is followed by the brilliant heavy song 'Monkey Wrench'. Hey Johnny Park is next, this a good soft rock song which intertwines with ...

Allong with Monkey Wrench and the other singles, the quality of teh rest fo the tracks never dips, and this is definately an album that you'll listen to again and again, from start to finish. Not really much more of a 'band' effort than the debut as Grohl also plays drums on this one and only one of the songs is co-wrote with the rest of the band ...

Advantages: better than the first one Disadvantages: not so different, but more commercial
This is the Foo Fighters second outing, and I think it's far more commercial and feels more 'produced' than their debut. On this occasion there is nothing wrong with that! This tighter more focused and controlled edge pays dividends, although some people may find it a bit odd to hear the lazy grunge of the first album replaced with this more traditional sound. Dave Grohl's newly found pop sensibilities are allowed to run riot, and some of the gems ... ...good rock of 'Monkey Wrench' see the Foo's taking a good 'pop' song and giving it a spiky edge, and I think he proves he's not just cashing in on Nirvana's success with this. There's a fair sprinkling of slowies, the best being 'February Stars'. But my favourite bits from the album include 'Hey Jonny Parker' , the mosh pit stomp of 'Wind Up' and the brilliant 'Everlong'. The Foo's keep improving with age, and this is a good solid rock album that'll ...

Advantages: Diverse but always vintage rock, Dave Grohl is fantastic Disadvantages: Not perfect - perhaps a couple of songs could have been trimmed
The Colour and the Shape is the US rock band the Foo Fighters' second album, and I think it is their best.
The Band
Dave Grohl is the Foo Fighters. The ex-Nirvana drummer formed the band in the mid 90s, and he has had many colleagues in the group over the years. The first album ("Foo Fighters") used session musicians to partner Grohl. The frontman played drums and sang on that first album. On this, the second album, he planned to play guitar and ... ...way through recording meant he had to drum himself again. The band has recycled numerous guitar players. A guitarist by the name of Paul Smear plays on Colour, but Franz Stahl replaced him for the tour for the album. For the most recent album, Stahl left, Grohl played guitar and appointed Taylor Hamilton to drum. The history of the band is confusing, but the music has always been catchy and upbeat.
