...to do with Butler. 1996's Coming Up Album was the acid test. The first band I ever saw live was Suede on the Coming Up tour so I've always had a soft-spot for them. I thought I'd dig out my copy of Coming Up and see if it still holds up.

Advantages: Excellent guitar rock, Brett Anderson Disadvantages: Some lyrics disappoint
I have always been surprised at the lack of commercial success which Suede have had. For me they were one of the best bands of the 1990’s mixing excellent musicianship with some reasonably good songwriting. Add to this Brett Anderson’s vocal style and presence and they should have dominated the charts. The problem for Suede has been that they were kept in the shadows by the Oasis/Blur media dominance though I felt both bands were inferior ...

Advantages: Thought Provoking, simply sublime, an all time classic! Disadvantages: there are bound to be some people in the world who aren't Suede fans
...follow up from, however with COMING UP they not only pull it off but create a body of work that can easily be discribed as a vast bungle of lyrical master peices...

Advantages: The singles Disadvantages: The other tracks
Shock horror! No Bernard Butler! This was Suede’s first album since Richard Oakes replaced Butler, so how does Oakes compare to Butler? Pretty well, the guitar playing is fine, but the songs are less great. This is an album of singles and not much else. But Suede did release a lot of the tracks as singles. The album also has a few too many ballads on it for my taste, so the rockier Trash, Filmstar and Beautiful Ones are the standout tracks for me. ...
