Advantages: Great lyrics | Nice and quirky Disadvantages: Songs pretty short | More variety would be nice
...of death and self loathing, Daisies of the Galaxy is a far more high spirited album, although a lot more well rounded than Beautiful Freak.
At the time of writing this album E had already wrote enough material to make an additional three. He commented that the songs he wrote were a mixture of both dark and light hearted style. Daisies of the Galaxy seems to follow the path of light hearted but traces of the style from Electro-shock Blues are still ... ...through the song.
5. Daisies of the Galaxy (3.27)
‘Watching the movie the worlds gonna end’
The first ‘slow’ song from the album but doesn’t fall into the truly dark verse and sound of Electro-shock Blues territory. Starting off with a slow guitar solo which carries on pretty much throughout the song E’s voice quietly sings over it in a calm and relaxed way. The song picks up sound as some strings are introduced ...

Advantages: Nostalgic, charming and catchy. Disadvantages: Not too much variety
When my dear mum saw the cover of this album, she made the (trite?) comment: 'Ooh, that's a very old fashioned looking sleeve!' And she was right, of course, seeing as the innocent little children and cute little dogs are painted in an idyllic, 1930s picture-book style. But open up the cover, to the next colour plate, to the left of the pretty songbirds, and you'll see two small boys with rosy cheeks and curling golden hair...carrying shotguns, out ... ...sweet little girl in the red dress on the front cover...what is she going to do with that stick? And why do the dogs look so scared? And that, basically sums up the album. Many people have called it sugary sweet, and it is, especially after the achingly sad autobiographical work that was Eels last album. This is traditional music with America branded across its heart. None of the songs rock out in the slightest way, not in comparison to anything ...

Advantages: I would say the best Ee's album, very lively Disadvantages: The design of the CD is good, but cardboard. So unless you keep it in a vacuum it will get ropey
After buying the other 2 albums by the Eels I wasn't too sure to chance buying this one or not. Then my boss at work said about how good this album was, I borrowed it for a few days and by the time I gave it back to her I had already ordered it online!
I think that this is the Eel's best album release to date. All of the tracks are good, and none of the lyrics are too depressing either. The music is all up-beat and very catchy.
Now I'll give you ... ...out of 10:
1)Grace Kelly Blues. Starts with a kinda big band theme, very catchy tune and the lyrics are quite good too. A nice start to the album. 7.
2)Packing Blankets. Not quite as good as the first song, the lyrics are not as good, but musically it isn't too different to the 1st song. 6.
3)The Sound Of Fear. The tune is quite good on this one, and the lyrics are very good. 8.
4)I Like Birds. This is an OK track, nothing to write home about, ...

Advantages: Beautiful music to soothe the soul Disadvantages: A couple of weak tracks
"A pessimist is never disappointed" said indie losers theaudience a few years ago and while their music may have been anonymous, the sentiment is especially true for Mark "E" Everett A.K.A "The Unluckiest Man In Pop". He isn’t unlucky in the sense that he’s missed out on the No. 1 spot or anything, but he has been the victim of countless family tragedies that taint the music of Eels. But one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain and that leads us ... ...early in 2000 and is the third LP offering from Eels. E’s misfortune peaked during the writing of the second Eels album "Electro-Shock Blues", therefore this album sounds as happy as a Lolly album in comparison, but those who crave sad songs won’t be disappointed. This album can be as blunt and harsh lyrically, as it can be soft and wistful musically.
Evidence of the more optimistic E is hard to see in songs like "It’s A Motherfucker" when he starkly ...

Advantages: Great tracks, they're cheerful again! Disadvantages: None
...this album have the word Daisies in the title, neither have the words “Pushing up” in front.’ Standout tracks are Grace Kelly Blues, a gentle brass and acoustic guitar strum-a-long which sets the tone for most of the album. Flyswatter is another great track, vibraphone and broody bass make for a song that wouldn’t be out of place in a Tim Burton film. A Daisy through Concrete is an almost light-hearted song that appears to be about getting over death, ...

Advantages: Unusual, uncomplicated and enjoyable Disadvantages: A little over-sweet, maybe best in small doses
After the bitterness of E's previous work - not surprising in view of what he had been through - this record comes as a surprise. The tone is immediately set by the delightful, whimsical cover design. At the risk of showing my age, yes Mark, I remember Altered Images and Jonathan Richman as well! There's an echo of both of them in the slightly childlike (not childish) aura throughout most of the tracks. The lead-off single "Mr E's Beautiful Blues" ... ..."I Like Birds" and "Jeanie's Diary" are the best examples, and things are kept suitably simple with mainly an acoustic guitar and brass band for backing. Some of the songs are less cheerful, particularly the sombre "Grace Kelly Blues". But overall this album is fun, and quite a breath of fresh air in the murkier waters of today's indie pop. We could all do with a little cheering up occasionally. ...

Review of Daisies Of The Galaxy [PA] - Eels
Daisies of the Galaxy is the third album released by the underated Eels. After 1998's depressing masterpiece Electro-Shock Blues this one is being touted as a "sunny pop" album. Although there are some happy songs on here the album will not lift your spirits like you'd expect.
"The Sound of Fear" is the first truly classic song on the album. It's typical of the album as it has a more upbeat nature to it but at the same time incorporates depressing, ... ...perfect line "headlights, field-mice, spiders in the kitchen/ don't think twice about whatever keeps you itching." Daisies' single ""Mr E's Beautiful Blues" is the best track on here but is tucked away quietly at the end as a b-side. Sarcasm runs through it as E repeats "goddamned right it's a beautiful day" over a breezy tune with wonderful pretty harmonies.
All of the tracks on "Daisies" are good in there own way. "Grace Kelly Blues", "Jeannie's ...

Advantages: Pretty, uplifting tunes with fun lyrics Disadvantages: Will not stay in your cd player for too long.
Nobody's pushing up any daisies on this one folks. With sounds of tweeting birds and 2 songs with "daisies" in the title, this album is most certainly a lot happier than the last 2. But does that mean it's the best? Well, no. For me, Eels' best album to date is still their fantastic debut, Beautiful Freak. But this cd is nonetheless excellent. Musically, it is very similar to the sad, mournful Electro-Shock Blues, but it is juts the opposite - bright, ...

Review of Daisies Of The Galaxy [PA] - Eels
Advantages: It keeps drawing you back Disadvantages: Makes you write ridiculous reviews
Eels have always distilled a beautiful combination of melancholy and hope, this album simply makes it two pseudo-therapy classics in a row. After the textbook examples of how to marry creative upsurge with personal recovery, the still fine 'Electro-Shock Blues', Eels further refine their warm sonic nous on this album, quirks largely absent, experimentalism muted, a purer song if you can hold back vomit. It's simple stuff really, beautiful tunes that ...

Advantages: Great lyrics, Good Instrumentation, Chirpy and sad Disadvantages: A Tad Repetetive, eccentric cover art
The third album from the moody threesome is a change of direction for this talented band. Beautiful Freak And Electro Shock Blues were dark, sad and moving albums, all highly critically acclaimed. This one turns over a new leaf. I first listened to this, and thought it was quite repetetive. But as i listened to it more and more, and the songs grew on me, i then saw its brilliance. Whilst still fairly sad in places (Estate Sale, Selective Memory) ... ...like Birds (imaginatively rhymed with turd!!) and the beautiful Jeannies Diary. This doesnt stop the run of fine albums from the eels, if anything it adds more to it than any other eels album did. A worthy buy, eels fan, or no eels fan, just for the great feeling u get listening to it (esp. Mr. E's Beautiful Blues) ...

Advantages: Deep music without being to in-your-face Disadvantages: Not for those into dancing the night away!
This album is one of my favourites at the moment. Leaving behind most of the darkness of their previous album, this one has a definate more cheerful tone. Still very autobiographical of "E" the main force behind the band, it is an album that fits together with the continuity of Sgt. Peppers, a classic of its time. It combines humour with a very deep pain apparent in the underlying tones of some of the songs. E's tragic life so far is illustrated ... ...himself seriously whilst not seeming to go too deep. The album does not conform to general pop with the use of an orchestra to create a beautiful collection of songs. Even for people who do not count themselves fans, this is the type of music that i think anybody could sit back and listen to. If you like straight pop then this is not for you, but those who like more than just dance tracks will appreciate this fantastic album. Topping this CD off ...

Advantages: wonderful walking music Disadvantages: dont listen to too much Eels in one day.
The Eels: Daisies of the galaxy, is generally one of my favourite albums. It has its own style of acoustic bleak rock, with some retro funk guitar effects. It is a band of middle aged men, a drummer ( ‘butch) , vocals and guitar( E – used to be called Mark Oliver Everett) and many other musicians such as strings and horns. The songs on the album include: Grace Kelly Blues, Packing blankets, The Sound of fear, I Like Birds, Daisies of the galaxy, ... ...a Daisy through concrete, Jeannie’s Diary, Wooden Nickels, Something is sacred, Selective memory. This is the tracks that it says are on the album on the back, but if you enter it to any CD player, the hit single ‘Mr E’s Beautiful Blues comes up as track number 15.
The songs range in this album, and nothing really too fast paced. Some of the ‘sad’ songs do quite well to reflect the players thoughts, and can make you think. The more upbeat songs ...

The latest offering from Eels is very good. The album to me is much better than previous and just needed a song such as novacain for the sole to make it a very, very good album. As it is it could do with maybe a song of novacain for the souls quality to make it a number 1 album. The best songs are probably flyswatter or I like birds as they are the easy to listen to songs that we have become to love. Overall a good album that could have been a little ...

Advantages: Varied styles; great, memorable lyrics Disadvantages: One or two duller songs
The Eels have a distinctive sound, even though there’s a real mix of styles (barroom blues, folk, jazz, for instance). “The sound of fear” reminds me of Nirvana or the Pixies; “Grace Kelly blues” has a Tom Waits style brass section, and there’s a kind of They Might Be Giants feel to the whole thing, but I think that’s just because it’s so varied. “Flyswatter” and “I like birds” are favourites of mine. There are none I don’t like, although a couple ... ...grab my attention, and are a little on the dull side.
I think the best track is “Mr. E’s beautiful blues”, with its mesmerizing tune, those sweet backing vocals, and it’s internal rhymes (“the ringmaster’s telecaster” and “the clown with a frown driving down…”). I’ll never understand why they saw fit to include it as an unlisted track, tacked onto the end. I think this song as good as anything they’ve done, if not their best. Overall, I like their ...
