Rockin The Fam... but not rocking the mic...

Advantages: Some of Jay-Z's contributions, Some Listenable Material, Improvement over last 2 albums..
Disadvantages: Rocafella Records is putrid pile of waste

Jay-Z began his career with so much promise that its ridiculous for me to state it. Along with Damon Dash, he founded Rocafella Records, and released the untimely classic known as Reasonable Doubt. Since then, he signed emcees who are supposedly his proteges including Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Amil, and most recently: Freeway, Cam'Ron, M.O.P., and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Jay-Z is supposedly building a dynasty, but unfortunately for him his record label ...
...two or three respectable lyricists, and the rest being complete trash. Since releasing Reasonable Doubt his record label, as well as his bank account, has grown tremendously, but unfortunately for Jay, his respect has detetiorated. As each album that he released since his classic has consistently gotten worse and worse with no improvement. His subject matter has detetiorated horribly, as his songs used to feature amazing street narratives and hustling ...

The Dynasty continues

Advantages: Jay-Z's wordplay, the production, fun listenable catchy songs
Disadvantages: The other rappers have been over used

Prior to this album which basically serves as an advert for the other rappers on the label. Jay-Z had already become a household rap name loved and despised in equal measure but of course in this genre especially, such mixed feelings simply go with the territory. His previous albums had already spawned massive hits including the very well known hard knock life. Yet despite the multi platinum selling former albums he decided to take a different approach ...
...production talents of in house producers including Just Blaze and Kanye West. As was mentioned this album is also an advert for the other rappers on the album who are Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel and the female rapper Amil who also puts in a few appearances on this album. The approach taken by Jay-Z works well, despite him taken a back seat and having only one verse on many songs, it's different enough from his past work to make it exciting and unique. ...

Not quite the start of a dynasty

Advantages: Well produced Great Lyrics It's Jay-Z
Disadvantages: Too many guest appearances Some weak tracks

As usual when purchasing or acquiring a Jay-Z album there is a general level of anticipation as this is the same rapper that produced the classic debut album Reasonable Doubt. Reasonable Doubt is widely considered as a landmark rap album, combining heavy hitting beats and razor sharp lyrics. Undoubtedly Jay-Z has the necessary talent to produce classic material, however similarly to Nas and arguably Biggie his follow up albums to Reasonable Doubt ...
...their moments. This brings me to The Dynasty, which unfortunately is worse than Reasonable Doubt, but better than Volume 2 and Volume 3 in my opinion. The main problem with this album is simply the volume of guest appearances due to Jay-Z trying to introduce the rest of "La Familia", namely Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel and the now retired Amil (Thank God). Having said this, there are some really outstanding tracks that I will discuss in more detail ...
