We've all heard the stories of the plethora of unique characters that make up the modern music scene. It's true that everyone has their quirks and Dev Hynes aka. Lightspeed Champion has more than his fair share. Musical self loathing, agoraphobia and a tendency to appear randomly on daytime TV shows however cant mask this shrewd musical talent, especially since he gathered himself sufficiently to write his debut solo album: "Falling From the Lavender ... ...his disturbingly cold take on subjects such as alcohol, loss of virginity and racial hatred.
The subjects above, combined with track titles like "All to Shit" and "Let the Bitches die" and a history in infamously chaotic 'grindie' band "Test Icicles". You'll probably be expecting to have a cacophony of noise pound your ears. But that would have been uncharacteristic of the energetic yet shy Hynes and could well have lead to a abstract if not pretentious ...

Ex- Test Icicles member Dev Hynes is a lyrical genius.
The verisimilitude of Dev's lyrics is so frank and real, and accessible to all. He writes about unreciprocated love, suicide, the banality of life and gives us a hopeful and comforting message if you're having a rough time- keep going, everything will be just fine.
In terms of sound, it's inevitable to say, with Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes as producer it is pretty damn DELIGHTFUL, as well as ... ...is in there, mixed in with soulful raw vocals, and a beautiful fingerpicked guitar. Even some clarinet for a kitsch accent.
The best track on this album in my opinion is 'Midnight Surprise'. The video is very cute yet very tainted, which matches the song. This one is the one you would like to have played at your funeral, it's charming and lovelorn, and exquisitely beautiful to sit and chill out to. The lyrics are deadly serious though, especially ...
