Forever - Spice Girls

This was the Spice Girls' last album and though rumours of a Greatest Hits and one off show including Geri are knocking around, I doubt anything will happen. "Forever" was their 3rd album and it cost me 97p from Asda would you believe?! A sure sign that the group are seen as yesterday's news. After selling over 35 million albums world wide from only two albums, the Spice Girl's have drafted in some of the biggest names to help them with the prduction of "Forever" the eagerly awaited third album. When Spice World was released by the Spice Girls about 3 years ago few people would have reckoned on the followup album not being released until the end of the year 2000, but for one reason or another this is how it has turned out. The album gets off to a cracking start with R'n'B track Holler and continues on a high note through track 2 to the third song 'Let Love Lead The Way' (my personal favorite). 'Brilliant' you think, its as good as an album ...
...songs fail to spark any sort of rela intrest and occasion are almost dire. There are some nice tracks with some catchy sections, but nothing that stands out as a potential future hit. Who knows what they'll find to release as their next single. The last track 'Goodbye' (christmas No1 two years ago) is certainly a high note to go out on, but a couple of good songs don't save the album from falling into the trap of 'mediocre'. Back in late '96 when the Spice Girls released "Wannabe", I was there to be a part of it all. The movie, the albums, the merchandise, it was all a part of my life. I had finally been allowed to have a teenybopper time in my life, but now I am a 15 year old, and the Spice Girls are not vey 'cool'. ...easy to groove to and get heated up for the rest of the album. At the fadeout, the disc drops you right back into a near clone of the previous song. As "Tell me why" fades into "Let Love Lead the Way", the Spice Girls demonstrate their skill at writing ballads in stirring proportions before dumping you into the midsection of the album. Having loved the previous two albums, and thought that they were particularly good, I was very sad to hear this album. Aside from a few tracks which they are obviously going to release anyway, the album is very dull and not all that interesting at all. The single that they released was, in my opinion, not too amazing in itself, but this album doesn't even reach up to that standard. For real Spice Girls fans, of course they are going to love it. ...
...they will still make it out to be a fairly decent album, even if it is 'not as good as their previous ones'. However, if you are looking to buy a 'pop'y album for this Christmas, or something perhaps R&B then I would recommend Steps, S Club 7 or Destiny's Child, Another decent album is Mel C's. The first and second times round, they rang the changes cleverly - an anthemic rabble-rousing cry here, a good ballad there, throw in a touch of Motown or salsa stylee, all well and good. ...borrowed this latest album - FOREVER of Spice Girls from a friend of mine. Well the reason I borrowed perhaps it is because they have 9 number one singles on chart, after Madonna. Thinking back to the spice girls early days, people criticised them for being a pop band, their first 2 albums sold millions worldwide. Since geri left the band and a 'break' was taken. After this they came back with a the number 1 double a-side Holler/Let Love Lead The Way. Yet this album seemed to have fairly poor sales. I was shocked as this is one of the best albums i own.
