...the Mississippi and sadly drowned. Grace is his only completed studio album, but what an album it is! Its influences are incredibly diverse, combining elements of Radiohead (circa The Bends, OK Computer), Led Zeppelin, and Van Morrison, fusing rock, jazz, gospel and folk into an intense musical experience.
Every track on this album is truly amazing, and from the haunting opening of the very first track, Mojo Pin, it’s obvious that this is ... ...Hallelujah. In terms of production, Grace has thankfully been kept raw enough to retain the genuine feel of the music but not so untouched that it shows its age.
The album as a whole is very melodically driven: Buckley is capable of weaving extraordinarily beautiful melodies seemingly from nowhere and nowhere is this more apparent than on the 7 minute epic, Lover You Should’ve Come Over. The gentle opening reveals a soulful, soft, pained, ...

Advantages: Buckley's voice is amazing Disadvantages: There can't be more
For years, my former flatmate kept telling me I should listen to “Grace”, the one studio album Jeff Buckley released before his premature demise. For years, I resisted, in much the same way as I have stubbornly resisted her calls to listen to Radiohead and Beck. After all, what I had heard of those I hadn’t enjoyed and if they were symptomatic of her musical tastes, then I could quite happily survive without ever hearing Jeff Buckley.
Another reason ... ...Cobain. Cobain is another musician who dies too young and his music has been revered ever since, despite not actually deserving it. Would we still be talking about Nirvana with such regularity had he still been alive and the band had just split up? Somehow, I doubt it. Knowing that Jeff Buckley had also been taken from us too soon made me wonder if the album really was as good as my flatmate used to tell me or if she was speaking too well of the ...

Advantages: Jeff Buckley's voice. Disadvantages: none
To me, 'Grace' is one of those albums that can stand the test of time. There is something to love in almost every single song on the album. Jeff Buckley had an amazing voice, ranging easily over 5 octaves, and he put his heart and soul into every song. One of his most famous songs - Hallelujah, deserves a whole review on its own really. The lyrics of this song have been wildly debated, yes, there has even been sites started up, dedicated to talking ... ...I could put the lyrics of the full song on here for you to see for yourself. Although, the credit for the lyrics can not go to Jeff Buckley, as this song was originally written by Leonard Cohen. What Buckley did though, was bring the song to life, sing it with passion and meaning, with only a simple guitar tune to go with it, something Cohen never managed to do in my opinion. The raw emotion that you get from this song is due to the fact that Buckley ...

Advantages: Great songs, incredible voice Disadvantages: There was never a second album proper
...If there was any justice, Grace would do just that. It’s not that I don’t like Led Zeppelin; in fact, they’re one of my favorite bands. But Grace is simply majestic.
The first thing you notice is Jeff's voice. You have to hear it to believe it; it’s truly one of the greatest voices in the history of rock. Every note he sings has the sort of soaring quality that even the greatest singers only manage when they sing falsetto. ... ...lovesick nightingale”. “Mojo Pin” opens the album; a dreamy showcase for Jeff’s singing and a great song in itself. But the title track, “Grace”, which comes next, is something else. A soaring chorus and wonderfully melodic guitars are the highlights. Robert Plant of Led Zepp said that this song actually made his hairs stand on end.
The third song, “Last Goodbye”, is quite possibly the greatest thing ...

Advantages: A good mix of covers and original material, some fine singing Disadvantages: I don't dig Eternal Life, not many memorable musical moments
...not the case with Grace (and I'm guessing his studio recordings in general). Jeff Buckley doesn't go for straightforward chords and chord progressions, and some of the song structures are complex, at least for my attention span! I guess there are not that many memorable moments in Grace for me. ...

'Grace'
Label - Columbia.
Released - 1994.
I was reading a magazine article recently about Mark Greaney the lead singer of 'JJ72' who was doing an interview. He was asked who his musical influences were to which he replied Jeff Buckley. Now believe it or not I had never heard of Jeff Buckley until this point but made a mental note and thought no more about it. A few days later I noticed Jeff Buckley again in the sale section of my local record ... ...the magazine article I had read, I decided to buy it not knowing what to expect, parting with a fiver in the process. Was it a fiver well spent or not ??
Before I review the album I ought to give you a little background on the artist himself. Not knowing much about him personally I have been doing a little research and was more than a little surprised at what I found !

...of poignancy. Grace is an incredibly varied mix, taking in Jeff's huge range of musical tastes. Three of the tracks are covers - Lilac Wine, Hallelujah and Britten's Corpus Christi Carol. The last, especially, is not the most obvious of choices but it works. The rest are all written/co-written by Jeff. There is one heavy rock track, Eternal Life (balancing out Britten's Carol preceding it), and one Indian-tinged track, with a drone backing and beautifully ... ...would be even better. Grace would be difficult to improve upon but I'm certain that Jeff could have done it. He never got the chance, and we're left to make the most of what we have of his voice and his music. ...making of a brilliant song! Grace is clearly a song, which is overflowing with emotion, which many would say was song writing genius!
3)Last Goodbye
One of my favourite Jeff Buckley tracks! Another song full of emotion, and a work of true beauty. Jeff intwines his use of falsetto and normal singing voice once again to give a beautiful feeling to the song.
The lyrics clearly express love, and a failing love at that:
"Well this is our last embrace, ... ...we overcome this wall, baby, maybe it is just because I didn't know you at all. Kiss me, please kiss me, kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation, oh you know it makes me so angry, cause I know that in time, I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye!"
A true work of art, and a song that will last in our memories forever!

...greatest albums will somewhere include Grace by Jeff Buckley. Indeed in Q’s list of greatest albums of the last 15 years Grace makes an appearance at #14.
The continual appearance of an album and singer I knew nothing about and had never heard obviously had a subliminal effect because I found myself buying it to see if I was missing anything.

Grace, recorded in 1993 is the only proper album of his released because in 1997 he was drowned in a freak accident before finishing recording the follow up. So does the album meet up to expectations? Well yes and no. There’s no doubt that he has a fine voice, from ...

This is the genius album Grace by Jeff Buckley. I will start by saying that many people that listen to, have heard of or like Jeff Buckley will often say that the only reason that he is so well loved is that he is dead. "Yes" I reply. I first discovered Jeff Buckley about two years ago whilst watching an interview with Muse on MTV2. Matt Bellamy was explaining how he was moved to 'sing like a woman' after listening to Buckley. The video for 'Grace' was played and i immediately got to tracking down the album!

Alternative/indie would loosley describe this genre but it is a masterpiece in its own right. Buckley's haunting voice works its way around the gentle guitar riffs and chords to whip up exactly the passion entailed in each song. Mojo Pin begins the album, starting with his soothing voice comforting the listener...its one of those songs that gradually builds up to a grand climax, tke note of the drumming - subtle yet effective.

Advantages: Fresh, different, talent obvious. Disadvantages: Not to everyone's taste.
The late and great Jeff Buckley, son of legend Tim Buckley, recorded only one studio album before his untimely and tragic death. Buckley has one of those voices that captivates you and draws you in to the point where you become addicted and hypnotised. Instead of reviewing every track, I am just going to talk of my favourites. 'Mojo Pin' the album's opener is a misleading track. It starts off with a tragic and sad guitar and is a haunting ballad ... ...into a complete rock out anthem of Jeff pleading 'Please, please, come back to me' before almost exploding with pain. His angst and distress is obvious, as is his fantastic guitar skills.
'Grace' is a song I still haven't completely grasped. {Someone please help me!} I think it's about a famous woman named Grace, who is dying, but will 'Wait in the fire’ - this is very catchy and almost pop-like, and Jeff holds one of his longest notes on this. ...

Back in 1994 when Grace was originally released it was seen as a commercial failure, but a musical hit. People from Bono (u2) to Matt Bellamy (muse) to Chris Martin (Coldplay) have held it in high esteem but why?
Well since Mr Buckley's death the album's sales have outsold the original figure, as musical tastes have developed to accept it more. When it was released the public were waiting for a new Nirvana to come along, Sony pushed Jeff as the ... ...Where as Kurt Cobains singing was seen as angsty, and venomous, Buckley's was seen as angellic with a topping of purity, much like his fathers. Advantages: Buckley's versatility and vocal mastery; the haunting lyrics; the emotive appeal of the music Disadvantages: To a true music conoisseur, none.
Grace was simply a beautiful album. Jeff Buckley was an immensely talented singer, and his loss to the world was a loss to all of us. You have only to listen once through the album to appreciate his sheer brilliance, though it takes many more to truly understand.
From the reflective and introspective vocals on what is probably his most famous track, 'Hallelujah', to the unorthodox vocal mastery on 'Mojo Pin', and the euphoria-inducing 'Lilac Wine', ... ...heady emotion of his singing and songwriting.
I could go on for hours eulogising over every track on this album, but suffice it to say that this is an absolutely indispensable record in anyone's collection. I struggle to think of another piece of work which has touched me more than this, and a shiver runs down my spine every time I hear the haunting refrains of Buckley's voice.
