There are some tracks that just make you want to get up and shout, others are quieter and make you appreciate the quality. And this band had the quality to go places, whoever you compare them to. I've had The Vines album for two days now, and I'm still in a state of ummm-ing and errr-ing over it. I bought it after hearing a couple of songs on Triple J (Australian radio station) as well as what they've had to say ("Really good"... ...sometimes get misplaced. I really wanted to like this album, as it was another shout to the world that Australian talent could make it big overseas. The Vines are comprised of three Sydney chaps, Craig Nicholls, Patrick Matthews and Dave Olliffe, as well as many cameos by other people who come in and do a bit here and there. ...there eagerly awaited 2nd album. Highly Evolved is The vines Debut album, and if you consider it a debut album you can just realise the true genious that is The Vines. As with most debut albums that Bands release tends to be lacking that certain fernese. ...Let's go through the tracks: HIGHLY EVOLVED Only one problem with this track- its not long enough! Catchy tune, and great guitar riff, this is one of the best songs on the album. You can really jump around to this song. Craig really sounds like he's getting into it and means what he's singing, which is always important. ***** AUTUMN SHADE Slow and solemn, unusual for the Vines. But still a great song. ...jam that culminates in a not so uncommon random screech from Nicholls, with a few hey-y-y-yy--y's thrown in for good measure. Craig Nicholls is a fantastic writer and he knows it. Hyped to the eyeballs by the British music press and fresh off a sold out UK tour, the Kurt Cobain of 2002 has got a hard job writing the follow up. ...album itself is consistent and highly listenable. Its all well and good for me to tell you how good it is but find out yourself by going to www.thevines.com and listening to samples and checking out their videos. A word of warning tho - this album is very short clocking in at roughly about 45 minutes. Buy this record if you're into bands like The White Stripes, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins et al.... ...
