Advantages Advantages Nas spits magical, street poetry over AMAZING N.Y. production that blows my STATE OF MIND!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Apparently nothing / Nas may never re-write a classic rap album like 'ILLMATIC' again.

Advantages Advantages amazingly intelligent for a 17 year old and all the best producers on one album

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Well well well, how the hell do you review the album that most true purest hip hop fans percieve to be the greatest album of all time lol, no review can do this album justice but ima just break down the songs of this short 10 song classic 5 mic album of perfection nevertheless. 1 - The Genesis A classic intro track that any real hip hop head should instantly recognise as a sample from the critically acclaimed 5 star film 'wilstyle', a film that perfectly documents the growth and roots of hip hop culture, from its humble beginnings in the south Bronx New York city (including graffiti break ... more

Advantages Advantages Great lyrics and subject matter; near stellar production; pure lyrical genius; AZ's guest appearance.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Two slightly weaker tracks.

Illmatic is an album that needs no introduction. Nas' interpretation of what Hip-Hop was was a vision that was unmistakably original and incredibly well rapped. His lyrics were stellar, his subject matter was underground and contained some of the most honest and introspective lyrics I've ever heard and the production was some of the best that the Hip-Hop world in general had ever heard. There was no doubt that Nas' debut album was going to be a classic, even before it hit shelves. There was something about this, Nas' debut album, that's better than nearly any other Hip-Hop album on the market ... more

    Advantages Advantages Production, poeticism, delivery

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of songs

Nas is viewed as one of the greatest poets that rap has ever seen. Illmatic marked his first splash into the speakers and the ears of people worldwide as a 21 year old who would go on to attain legendary status within hip hop. On first note, you will notice that there are only 10 songs on here, in fact there is only 9 because one of them is not actually a song. Therefore it became difficult to perceive that I could ever truly appreciate an album with such a limited number of tracks. Nontheless I listened to the album and was blown away by the quality of it. The words truly enthralling perhaps ... more

Advantages Advantages CLASSIC, Pure Unmatched Lyrical Masterpiece, Rellevent and Brilliant Subject-Matter, Perfect Production, No Filler, AZ

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too Short... I WANT MORE!

Before I am, Before Nastradamus (Nastra-Garbage), Before It was Written, Before Stillmatic, Before God's Son, Before Nas "Big Chain" Escobar, Before Commercial Nas, there was Illmatic. Illmatic is considered by many to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, and perhaps.... the GREATEST. When Illmatic was released, jaws dropped, and people went running for the hills. At this time, the lyricism and storytelling was unmatched by any emcee. This is the album that put Nas on the map. This is the album that labeled him the "New Rakim." This is the album that will put Nas in the book of ... more

Advantages Advantages Original, Flawless lyrics, Nas Explossive Debut Album

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Virtually Nothing

In 1994 a legend was born... A 19 year old fresh faced kid going by the name of Nasty Nas dropped his debut album: illmatic. The album was & still is the cornerstone of the modern Hip-Hop revolution & is the standards by which all new rappers are judged. This album broke the mould & its quality remains unmatched in hip-hop. I'll run through the songs & give you my opinion: The Genesis - Basically just an Intro so I wont rate it as a proper song. Basically signifies Nas' arrival in the game. N.Y. State of Mind - Grimey Old Skool beat featuring a timeless flow of lyrics by Nas'. The chorus could ... more

Advantages Advantages Sublime production, lyrics and delivery. As close to perfect as it gets.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

Illmatic is possibly the most celebrated debut rap album of all time, few since have been heralded for such consistent quality across an entire album. Even looking at the cover you get an indication that there is something a little special about it. It is a potent image, one that combines the vulnerability of the child and the stereotypical rap image of 'the ghetto'. To understand where the quality behind the albums you need only look at the list of names behind its production. The small range of producers is second to none, in my opinion unquestionably the greatest group ever assembled. DJ ... more

Advantages Advantages great production, amazing lyrics

Disadvantages Disadvantages if only it were longer!

Before Nas had platinum plaques and wore mink coats, there was Illmatic. After shining on his verse on “Live at the BBQ” on Main Source’s album, Nas was given the chance to prove what he was about on this, his first album. The album features great production from L.E.S., Large Professor and Pete Rock. The album is a classic from the intro to the last of the ten tracks, no filler, no annoying skits. With crowd pleasers like “Halftime” and “It Ain’t Hard to Tell” (where Nas flips a Michael Jackson beat) with great lines like “see me in the streets without a ton of reefer, that’s like Malcom X ... more

Advantages Advantages It contains everything good about 90s rap, in one debut album.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It is only ten songs long!

I know it is a cliché to say you love this album as it is hailed by many to be the greatest rap album of all time. But I assure you that it really is a truly amazing album. Do not elt the generically postisitive reviews you hear put you off, it isn't just people wanting to appear to be in on some hype, it is genuinely, in my opinion one of the all time great albums. The track list is as follows: 01.The Genesis lyrics 02.N.Y. State Of Mind lyrics 03.Life's A Bitch lyrics 04.The World Is Yours lyrics 05.Halftime lyrics 06. Memory Lane (Sittin' In Da Park) lyrics 07.One Love lyrics 08.One Time 4 ... more

Advantages Advantages It will be in your top 10

Disadvantages Disadvantages Later albums couldn't possibly live up to the expectation produced by this debut

The first time I heard this album I knew that there may be one or two other albums on a par, but it would never be beaten. It is one of those rare first albums that will be remembered forever: Gritty, just as it should be, and not over produced, emphasizing Nas' genuine sound. I won't go into detail on every track as other reviewers have said all there is to say but The World is Yours, Halftime and Memory Lane are the three that stand out to me (although there is little to choose). I could listen to any of the tracks on loop and there are no fillers, made just to bulk up the album. The rapping ... more
